The man, in his 40s, was taken to Worthing Hospital for a precautionary check-up after being trapped under the old American car that he was working on in Ashington. It is believed that the car, weighing nearly 2 tons, rolled off a jack in Rectory Lane around 9.55am, trapping the man and constricting his breathing. He was able to use his mobile phone to call for help and officers from a road policing unit and neighbourhood policing response team were quickly on scene to release him. Road policing officer PC Peter De Silvo was one of the first on the scene. He said: "One of my colleagues had hopped over a gate and found the man as I arrived. He was completely covered by the vehicle and the weight of it meant that he was struggling to breathe, but he was still able to talk to us and tell us where the jack was. We replaced it and jacked the car back up, but it was still sinking on the jack so we pulled him out and kept him calm until an ambulance arrived. He's a really lucky man. If he hadn't been able to get at his mobile phone, he could have laid there unnoticed for ages as there was no part of him that was showing from underneath the car. We were just glad that he was talking to us and it looks as though his injuries aren't too serious." SUSSEX POLICE report - Ref: PR46242 / 2014 report date- 21 July 2014 Tangmere teenager jailed for causing death by dangerous driving A teenager has been jailed for four years after pleading guilty to causing death by dangerous driving. Harry Smith, aged 18, of Haleybridge Walk, Tangmere, appeared at Chichester Crown Court for sentencing after he last month admitted causing death by dangerous driving and two charges of causing serious injury by dangerous driving in a fatal collision on the A285 at Halnaker in September 2013. Judge Christopher Parker QC also disqualified Smith from driving for four years and ordered him to take an extended re-test before holding a licence again. The court heard that Smith was driving a Vauxhall Corsa car travelling south, when it came off the road and overturned. Passenger Jasmine Elkasmi, 16, of Carlton Avenue, Bognor, died of her injuries. Two other 16-year-old girl passengers who were in the car were seriously injured, one being left paralysed from the waist down and other suffering facial and dental injuries. Neither can be named for legal reasons. Afrer the hearing, Sergeant Paul Wood, of the Arundel road policing unit, said: "Smith was 17 at the time of the collision and he had only held his driving licence for about seven weeks. He had been stopped by police before the collision on a number of occasions due to the manner of his driving and he had been issued with a section 59 warning, which meant that if he had been stopped again, his vehicle would have been seized. A girl died as a result of his dangerous driving and two other girls were left with serious injuries, one of them life-changing."
