West Witterings man sentenced for fraud
A man from West Wittering has been sentenced for fraud.
Rene Coutts, 39, from Summerfield Road, West Wittering, who pleaded guilty to three counts of fraud by false representation at Worthing Magistrates Court on January 16, has been sentenced.
In January 2013, Coutts, who is unemployed, visited a neighbour and and told her that his baby daughter was in intensive care and he did not have the money to get to the hospital to see her. The victim gave him £20. He then told the victim that his baby took a turn for the worse, was transferred to another hospital, and he needed money to get there. He took another £20 from the victim.
After a couple of weeks he visited the victim again and told her that there was a taxi outside and he was taking his mother to see the baby before the life support machine was turned off. The victim again lent him £20.
After a couple of weeks Coutts visited the victims address again and told her that his mother suffered a massive heart attack and had died and he needed more money. This time he was lent £20. On February 25 last year, Coutts attended a local butcher where an acquaintance worked and told him that his baby has just died and he needed money for a suit. He was given £30.
On March 18 and 23 last year Coutts attended a another butchers in East Wittering where pretended to own the business and took products worth more than £400 but never paid for them.
PC Dave Lyons said: "Coutts exploited these people by spinning a sob story and preying on people's compassion for the terrible situations he was in, situations he had completed concocted. He does not own his own business and both his mother and daughter are alive and well. He lied to these people with the sole intention of taking money for himself, while leading them to believe they were lending him the money in his time of need. Coutts has been punished for his deceitful behaviour and rightly so."
He has been given a nine month community order with six months supervision on each charge to run concurrently. He will also pay back the money he took, £80 compensation to his first victim, £30 to the second and £472.02 to the final victim.

Elderly Hailsham woman falls prey to courier scam
An elderly woman from Hailsham has been scammed out of £7,000 by someone claiming to be a police officer from London.
The 86-year-old was contacted by telephone by a conman who said he was a police officer and convinced her that her bank account had been compromised. She was asked to remove £7,000 from her account and give it to a courier who would attend her home. She was then asked to ring the bank but the scammer kept the phone line open so they could pretend to be her bank as well. She went to the bank and withdrew the money today.
Detective Chief Inspector Ali Eaton from the Surrey and Sussex Specialist Crime Command said: "Under no circumstances would the police or your bank request your PIN number over the telephone or arrange collection of your bank cards from your home address in this manner. I advise all members of the public to never give out your bank details to someone who has contacted you on your home phone unsolicited. If you have any suspicions please do not use the phone you have just been called on to contact the police or your bank. If possible use another phone to contact the police to report it, or to contact a friend or relative to alert them. I urge anyone reading or hearing this message to pass it on to any friends and relatives who may not be aware of this particular type of targeted fraud, to prevent any vulnerable friends or family members from becoming victims."
If you have any information, whether you have received similar calls or know someone who has been a victim of this crime please contact Sussex Police by ringing 101 quoting Operation Edisto.

It is recommended that a oil-fired AGA heat-storage cooker should be serviced at six monthly intervals. 3-oven and diesel models may extend to 12 months. Solid fuel models would require their internal flue ways to be cleaned monthly, with a six-monthly sweeping of the connecting flue pipe. The main chimney should be swept annually.

POLICE UPDATE - Ref: PR44691 / 2014
Appeal for witnesses to M23 collision
Police are appealing for witnesses to the above incident.
The 19-year-old man was airlifted to the Royal London Free Hospital in Whitechapel after the collision in the northbound carriageway and is in a critical condition.
Prior to the collision on the motorway, a vehicle he had been travelling in had been briefly pursued in Moat Road, East Grinstead. This vehicle had been allegedly taken without the owner's consent. It had also been involved in a collision with another car in London Road for which it had failed to stop at the scene. The vehicle was then abandoned in Stace Way and two men ran from the car. A 33-year-old man from Crawley was arrested nearby on suspicion of being carried in a vehicle taken without consent and is currently in custody. The other man from Crawley Down, was then on foot and involved in a collision with a car driving northbound on the M23.
Police have referred the incident to the Independent Police Complaints Commission as a matter of standard policy because of the police activity at the time. Police are appealing for witnesses to the collision on the northbound carriageway of the M23 between junction 10a and 10. The road had to be closed southbound and northbound for the casualty to be treated and for the air ambulance to land.
Anyone with information should ring 101 quoting Operation Hadleigh.

Time: 13.20
Incident: RIB in trouble off West Wittering
Solent Coastguard requested launch in response to a 999 call from a rigid inflatable that had broken down and was in the surf off West Wittering Beach. The Atlantic 85 Lifeboat was launched, very quickly found the rib and it’s three young crew and because they were in breaking surf and close inshore the lifeboat crew immediately rigged a towline to pull the rib off the surf and across to a safer position opposite the Lifeboat Station. A crew member went aboard the rib and checked to make sure the water in the boat was from wave action and not a damaged hull. An alongside tow was rigged and the boat and crew taken to Sparkes Marina and advice given about wearing life jackets. The rib was handed over to the Coastguard team who arranged a commercial tow from Hayling Rescue back to Thorney Island Sailing Club.

FIRE & RESCUE SERVICE REPORT
Incident: RIVER RESCUE PROMPTS WARNING FROM FIREFIGHTERS
Firefighters are warning about the danger of playing in water after being called to rescue a boy who got into trouble on the River Lavant yesterday evening. They were called to the stretch of river in the Hornet in Chichester shortly after 6pm last night after the 12-year old, who was playing on a makeshift raft with friends, fell into the water and was swept downstream. The force of the water carried the boy dangerously close to the culvert pipe, where the river goes under the city, before he managed to pull himself onto a small ledge.
A crew from Chichester Fire Station were on the scene within minutes of the alarm being raised and were able to reach the boy using a system of ladders and ropes. The boy, who was suffering from cold and shock, was treated at the scene by paramedics from South East Coast Ambulance Service but did not need hospital treatment.
Service Incident Commander in charge of the rescue, Kim Taylor, said afterwards: "This young lad had a very lucky escape because this could have been a much more serious incident. If he had been swept a few more feet downstream into that culvert pipe then I have no doubt we would be talking about a tragic outcome. The protracted period of rain and higher than usual water levels mean that the risks are even greater at the moment. Our advice is simple - don't put yourself or others at risk just stay out of the water."

Man jailed for 20 years for rape and drug dealing
A man has been jailed for 20 years for a series of rapes, assaults and drug offences.
Ardian Maurturi, 33, who at the time of the offences was living in Farncombe Road, Lewes, was sentenced at Hove Crown Court having been convicted of a series of offences
He received 15 years for each of three rapes, to run concurrently; five more years to run consecutively for possession of cocaine with intent to supply; and sentences of two years for false imprisonment, six months each for two offences of causing actual bodily harm, six months each for two offences of assault by beating, and six months for acting with intent to pervert the course of justice. The court also ordered the confiscation from Maurturi of £5842 cash, assessed as proceeds of drugs dealing.
As an Albanian national, Maurturi also faces automatic deportation on his release.
The offences came to light when a 25-year-old woman walked into Brighton police station in September last year to report that she had just had to have her cat put to sleep by a vet after Maurturi had attacked

it, and that she had been beaten and raped by him. When local officers went to the Farncombe Road address to arrest him, Maurturi tried to escape by jumping out of a second floor window, breaking his leg. Police then uncovered a horrific account of the way in which he had subjected the victim to physical and sexual abuse.

Incident: Man arrested on suspicion of rape in Burgess Hill
A 21-year-old man from Burgess Hill has been questioned by police on suspicion of the rape of a woman on a night out in the town.
Shortly after 3.20am officers were contacted by a woman who said she had been raped. The 43-year-old, from Burgess Hill, was waiting for a taxi outside Burgess Hill Library when a man approached her and they began talking. He offered to walk her home and they set off along Lower Church Road. When they got to Marle Place in Leylands Road the man attacked and raped her in a wooded area near the playground. After the attack the man left and the victim went home and raised the alarm.
A 21-year-old man last night handed himself in to police and was questioned over the incident. He was later released on bail until 31 March while officers carry out further inquiries.
Detective Inspector Rob Walker said: "We have questioned a suspect and are not looking for anyone else at this stage. This matter does not appear to link to any other incident or individual. I am still keen to speak to people who were in the area between Civic Way and Leylands Road in the early hours of yesterday morning, particularly those who saw or heard anything suspicious near Marle Place between 2.50am and 3.20am."

Don't believe companies that claim to work with Sussex Police
Police are urging residents not to trust any company that claims to be working with Sussex Police.
The force and Trading Standards officials have been contacted by residents who have been called by a company called Direct Response Security. The company's representatives have falsely suggested the firm is working with Sussex Police and that by signing a contract to have one of their alarms fitted, residents will have direct access to a nearby police patrol at all times. The latest incident involved a resident in Battle who was contacted last Sunday, 23 February, by someone who said they worked for the company.
Chief Inspector Martin Sims said: "We do not have an arrangement with alarm companies or any similar businesses. If a member of the public calls 999 or 101 they are responded to based on the seriousness of the emergency, not whether they have an alarm or not. Do not accept the claims of any company that suggests it is approved by or linked to Sussex Police. If you hear such claims, please report them to us."
If you are contacted, call 101 or email sussex.pnn.police.uk
Alternatively, call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
