TUESDAY 3 JANUARY - 2012

BUSY MORNING FOR FIREFIGHTERS AFTER HIGH WINDS & RAIN
West Sussex firefighters have had a busy morning helping to keep residents and businesses safe during the current high winds and torrential rain.
In the last four hours West Sussex Fire & Rescue's Command & Control Centre has received in excess of forty 999 calls for weather related incidents across the county with coastal areas being particularly affected.
Crews have been called to assist with a wide variety of potentially dangerous situations including fallen trees, loose roofing, precariously hanging signs and canopies and unstable chimney stacks.
Two of the more serious calls came in Sidlesham with the gable end of a semi-detached house badly damaged by a fallen electricity pylon and, in a separate incident, part of a roof blown off a converted chapel on Mill Lane. Thankfully, there have been no reported injuries.
West Sussex Fire & Rescue offers the following advice during high winds:
Stay indoors as much as possible
If you do go out keep away from the sheltered side of boundary walls and fences - if these structures fail they will collapse on that side.
Do not go outside to repair damage during a storm, wait until it passes.
Take extra care if driving - high winds mean increased risks, particularly if combined with heavy rain.
Expect sudden gusts at any time, but especially on open stretches of road, when passing bridges or when overtaking high sided vehicles.

EARLY MORNING RESCUE FROM CRAWLEY HOUSE FIRE
Two men had to be led to safety by firefighters this morning after a fire in a conservatory went undetected because the batteries in their smoke alarms had been removed.
West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service was called to the mid terrace house on Samphire Close in Broadfield at 2.24 this morning after a neighbour spotted smoke pouring from a rear conservatory and dialled 999 to raise the alarm.
Two fire crews from Crawley were on the scene just 8 minutes later and while one team of firefighters wearing breathing apparatus immediately set to tackling the blaze at the back of the house, a second team managed to rouse the men, who were asleep inside the property, leading them to fresh air and safety. Thankfully, both men were uninjured.
Crews quickly extinguished the fire using a hose reel and a covering jet, managing to contain the fire to just the conservatory area. Firefighters also fitted three emergency smoke detectors inside the property.
Fire investigation officers are still currently working at the scene to establish the cause of the fire.
Incident Commander Julian Bridgeman from Crawley Fire Station said afterwards:
"This incident really does highlight the importance of having working smoke alarms in your home. Although there were smoke detectors in the property, the batteries had been removed which meant the owners didn't get that vital early warning to the fire and it developed dangerously undetected. - Both men were asleep when we arrived, so had the neighbours not spotted the smoke coming from their property and raised the alarm, this incident could have had a very different and possibly tragic outcome. The message from us is really simple - make sure you have a smoke alarm on each level of your home and test them weekly. Don't hope they work, know they work."

WOMAN SUFFERS BURNS AFTER TACKLING CHIP PAN FIRE
Firefighters are highlighting the dangers of tackling chip pan fires after a woman was badly burned in Crawley yesterday.
West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service was called to the ground floor flat in Alexendra Court on Stonefield Close at 1.34pm yesterday afternoon after the woman, in her twenties, discovered the chip pan alight on the hob and tried to extinguish the flames using water.
The water immediately reacted with the hot oil creating a huge fireball and severely burning the woman's right arm. A second woman also sustained minor burns to her arm. The woman was treated at the scene by paramedics from South East Coast Ambulance Service.
Firefighter Matt Murphy from Crawley Fire Station said- "Tackling chip pan fires is extremely dangerous and pouring water on them is lethal. Water is denser than oil so it sinks to the bottom of the pan and instantly vaporises, causing it to eject a huge fireball, which, unfortunately in this case, meant the woman got badly burned. When our crews arrived we discovered the lady had also carried the pan outside which was taking a serious gamble. This could easily have meant sustaining even more serious burns or spread a fire through her home. Our advice is simple - get everyone out and call us out, do not try and tackle it yourself."

WHEAT BAG WARNING FOLLOWING FIRE IN CRAWLEY
An elderly lady from Crawley had to be led to safety by firefighters yesterday after a wheat bag caught fire filling her home with acrid smoke.
West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service was called to the mid terrace bungalow on Ifield Drive just before 4pm yesterday afternoon after the lady, in her nineties, accidentally overheated her wheatbag causing it to ignite inside the microwave. Fortunately, West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service had carried out a Home Fire Safety Check at the property and the lady was protected by a Careline System with a specialist 'Firelink' smoke alarm. This meant that an operator at a 24-hr monitoring centre was automatically alerted to the fire and could place an immediate 999 call to the Fire Service. A crew from Crawley arrived within 4 minutes and firefighters were able to bring the lady out to fresh air and safety and ventilate her home using a positive pressure ventilation fan. The lady was treated for smoke inhalation by paramedics and subsequently taken to hospital. Wheat bags, heated in microwave ovens, are often used as an additional source of warmth and therapeutic pain relief, but if not used correctly, they can pose a real fire hazard.

Time: 17:20-18:26
Location: HERON COURT, VICTORIA ROAD, WORTHING
Incident: Police are investigating an arson attack at Heron Court, Victoria Road, Worthing, at around 5.40pm on Saturday 21 January.
The West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service contained the fire and ensured all residents had been safely evacuated. Following an investigation of the scene by fire investigators, the incident is being treated as suspicion. Detective Constable Chris Leech said: "Heron Court counts young families with children and vulnerable people among the residents living there. Arson can easily end in tragedy, as we sadly hear all too often, with fires spreading rapidly and indiscriminately. Thankfully residents took prompt action to evacuate and the fire sevice swiftly dealt with the fire. "I would ask anyone with information that could assist in the investigation to please come forward as soon as possible." The majority of damage was contained to one flat, which has been caused through smoke damage. Police have conducted house-to-house inquiries, gathering forensic evidence and reviewing CCTV as part of the ongoing investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact Sussex Police on 101 quoting serial 1282 of 21-1 or anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Location: A259, RUSTINGTON
Incident: FATAL RTC - Police are appealing for witnesses following a fatal road traffic collision at 10.55am today on the A259 at Rustington, near to the Sainsbury's roundabout. At this time the exact circumstances of the crash are unclear, but it appears that a vehicle driven by an elderly man has lost control and collided with a lampost and a road sign. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. A spokesman said: "The road was closed for three and a half hours whilst officers carried out investigations to establish the cause of the crash. Those enquiries are continuing and we would like to hear from anyone who saw what happened to contact police if they haven't already done so. One of the theories that is being looked into is whether the gentleman who died became ill at the wheel of his car." Anyone with information should call Sussex Police on 101, quoting Operation Barrow.
