Driver banned and given suspended jail sentence for dangerous driving
A driver has been banned and given a suspended jail sentence after racing another vehicle.
Sam Leech, 30, of Petworth Road, Haslemere, Surrey, was racing his blue Rover car east on the B2131 in Linchmere on the Sussex Hampshire border at 5.30pm on 16 April 2011 against another vehicle. He overtook another car on the brow of a hill colliding with an oncoming car driven by a 17-year-old girl from Linchmere. Both Leech and the girl were taken to hospital with minor injuries. The third vehicle was never traced.
Leech was later arrested and charged with dangerous driving. He pleaded not guilty to the charge and appeared at Chichester Crown court today. He was found guilty of dangerous driving by a jury, and the judge was minded to give Leech an immediate custodial sentence, however as he had no previous convictions, he received a 12-month custodial sentence suspended for two years, was disqualified from driving for two years and ordered to take an extended re-test. He was also ordered to do 200 hours unpaid work and pay £500 towards prosecution costs.

Incident: Driver dies in crash
A driver has died after his car left the B2036 near Burgess Hill and hit a tree in the early hours of this morning. The Volkswagen Golf was spotted by another driver shortly after 3.30am, but police believe that the crash may have happened some time before that. The driver, a 20-year-old man from Handcross, was sadly found dead in the wreckage.
He has been named as Jay Ansell, 20, of Truggers, Handcross.
Sergeant Stewart Goodwin from the Sussex Police Road Policing Unit said: "The vehicle had cooled down when we arrived, so I believe that it could have left the road some time earlier. We would like to hear from anyone who may have seen the car off the B2036 Cuckfield Road at any time before 3.30am. "It has been necessary for us to close the road while rescue and recovery work takes place and Highways will need to clean the road before we are able to re-open it. I should like to thank people living locally and other users of the road for their patience and understanding while this is carried out."
The road remained closed at 10.30am.

Incident: £500 reward following Littlehampton Arson attacks
Police are offering a £500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for a series of arson attacks in Littlehampton. Colleagues from West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service have attended 32 incidents of trees and bushes being set alight since November last year in the Brookfield and West Rustington areas.
Investigator Tom Van Der Wee, who is leading the investigation, said: "We have made a significant effort in investigating these fires. I want to reassure the public that they have not posed a danger to people's homes and on each occasion fire colleagues have attended promptly and dealt with the fires."
Anyone who has any information about the fires, the latest being in Fastnet Way, on Sunday night, 27 January, is urged to contact police on 101 quoting Serial 1544 of 27/1 or Operation Capture. You can also contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Crews worked in extremely hot conditions to limit the fire and prevent it spreading to neighbouring properties. Unfortunately the only smoke alarm in the three storey house had previously been removed meaning the occupier didn't get an early warning of the fire.
