Location: Heathrow Airport Incident: Missing Darren found Darren Brown, who has been missing from his home in Balcombe since Wednesday afternoon, 28 November, has been found safe after he was spotted by Metropolitan Police officers on the outskirts of Heathrow Airport shortly before 3am tonight. He has now been returned to Sussex. Just before 6.30pm today a suspect, described as a teenage youth, walked into the Barnham Superfayre store in Lake Lane, Barnham, produced what appeared to be a handgun, and demanded money. However when the sole member of staff went to phone the police, he ran off empty-handed and got into a car waiting nearby which sped off. The staff member, a man, was shaken but unhurt. As a result of immediate police enquiries, a silver Mercedes saloon was stopped just under two hours later by unarmed officers at the A27 junction with the A22 at Polegate in East Sussex. Two men were arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery. A boy was later arrested at a Bognor address on suspicion of the same offence. Heavy lifting equipment is being brought in and the operation is likely to take several hours. Police are advising drivers to avoid the A29 north of Billingshurst following the break down of an HGV lorry this afternoon. Emergency services were called to the incident at around 12pm following reports that a trailer had broken away from the lorry on the roundabout near the Audi garage. There are no injuries. A crane has been organised to assist with the breakdown and this may cause the A29 to be closed for several hours. Drivers are advised to find an alternative route where possible. He was taken to St Richard's Hospital where he was sadly pronounced dead. The man, from Chichester, was driving a Honda Jazz along Westhampnett Road at around 3.10pm when his car veered into the opposite lane and collided with a Peugeot 306 driven by a woman from Selsey. Crews from Crawley were at the scene within minutes and firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the property to find the 87-year old woman, who has not yet been named, unconscious in her armchair. She was immediately carried outside to fresh air where fire crews and paramedics performed CPR and managed to revive her. Sadly, the woman died a short time later in hospital. The fire is believed to have started accidentally from a dropped cigarette. This woman unwittingly took her own photo when she tried to unlock an iPhone that had been stolen from the Coalition nightclub in Brighton earlier this month. The conditions on the road going south from the Robin Hood roundabout just north of Broadbridge Heath to the Hop Oast roundabout north of Southwater, Horsham, have caused at least 12 vehicles to skid and crash since 9.45am. This area is now closed. No one has been seriously hurt. A few drivers have minor injuries and damage to their cars. The northbound lane of the A24 is open but traffic is heavy. Traffic trying to move southbound is being diverted through Horsham. The southbound lane is likely to be closed for another two hours. At about 8.15pm this evening the local man was sittting chatting with two friends, in his car in Squirrel Lane, an unmarked but public road in a rural area near Magham Down, near Hailsham. Suddenly there was a loud bang and the driver's window shattered. All three got out and ducked for cover. A few minutes later they got back into the vehicle and saw an impact mark to the corner of the windscreen and a spent .243mm bullet in the passenger footwell. The driver had a burn injury to his neck where the bullet skimmed past as it entered the vehicle. PC Katie Price said- "This man had a really lucky escape and we want to trace anyone known to be shooting in the area such as deer stalkers - the bullet found is of the type used for deer hunting. West Sussex Emergency Management Severe Weather Warning A band of rain is currently crossing West Sussex, and is expected to become heavy late this evening into the early hours of tomorrow, bringing the possibility of flood to parts of the County. An amber alert has been issued by the Met Office for heavy rain and the public should be prepared for an increased risk of both surface water and river flooding. The County Council and partners including the Environment Agency are taking steps to prepare and encourage the public to do the same, and guidance is available from our website. It happened at about 5.40pm when the victim, who is local, was driving her green sports car and stopped at the Downview traffic lights in Felpham Way, Bognor. She was following a black hatchback, which is believed to have been travelling without lights, before it stopped at the Middleton Road junction with Flansham Park. The driver got out, opened the door of the victim's car, and attacked her, causing injuries to her face and hands. A police spokesperson said: "This was an extremely frightening assault and, understandably, the victim was very shaken and upset by what happened. Flooding is expected for the River Mole at Charlwood and Hookwood including Povey Cross Road and Gatwick Airport, West Sussex and Surrey in the early evening. The landlord and family were upstairs but were not injured, and the fire, which was confined to the outside of the front door, is being treated as deliberate. Police are appealing for witnesses and information following the incident, which took place at 5.24pm in Hammy Way. The victim had returned home from work shortly before, and had taken his till from his van into the house. After his dog started barking, he went outside to investigate and saw the group who demanded money. One threw liquid towards his face, but he managed to fight back and they ran off empty-handed. Police said: "It would appear that this was an attempted robbery by three men who had seen the victim take the till from his van into the house. He defended himself, despite having something thrown towards his face, which fortunately did not cause any harm or injuries. We are looking for three men, one of whom spoke with an Asian accent and was about 5'10" tall, of slim build, wearing a dark grey hooded top with the hood up and a grey scarf covering his face. The other two were both about 6' tall, of slim build, and wore dark clothing with their faces covered. " Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101, quoting serial 1129 or 27/12. POLICE report - Ref: PR41287 / 2012 Time: 10am Location: Lloyds Bank, Littlehampton Incident: Security guard robbed outside bank Just after 10am today, outside Lloyds Bank in Beach Road, Littlehampton, a security guard employed by Group4 Security was attacked by two men who snatched a box containing a substantial amount of cash from him after a struggle, and made off on a silver or black motorcycle, registration number LB07OMF. No weapons were seen and the guard was shaken but received no visible injury. The motorcycle made off the wrong way, north, in Beach Road and then into Franciscan Way, before disappearing in the direction of Arundel Road. The pillion passenger is described as wearing white trainers, dark trousers, a full face black helmet, and a motorcycle jacket with a white or pink 'V' on the back. Sergeant Roy Hodder said: "We are keen to hear from anyone who was in Littlehampton town centre this morning and saw anything of what happened. The pillion passenger was seen to emerge from the phone box in Beach Road, at the junction with High Street, as the security van approached, and joined the motorcyclist, who had ridden up separately." Water pumped out by WSF&RS using LPP and suction pump WrL Littlehampton POLICE report - Ref: PR41237 / 2012 Time: 12 - 4pm Location: Lewes Incident: Guns stolen in Lewes burglary Two firearms have been stolen in a burglary at a Lewes flat. Between midday and 4pm today a flat in Lancaster Street, Lewes, was broken into by forcing the flat door. A secured and locked gun cabinet, containing a shotgun and a .22 rifle, plus 50 shotgun cartridges, was forced off its fastenings in a concealed space in the flat, and removed. Keys to the cabinet were not taken. The shotgun is a Brno make, double-barrelled and side-by-side, with black barrels and a brown stock, and bears the serial number 100974979. Both weapons are licensed and held by the owner, who is the occupant of the flat. Detective Constable Gary Baker of the East Sussex Priority Crime Team said: "We think that the burglary was carried out by someone who knew that there were firearms there, but enquiries are at an early stage. There have been no other such thefts recently and the motive for this crime is not clear at this stage. If you were in the Lancaster Street area and saw any suspicious activity, or if you have any other information about the burglary, in particular where the guns may be now, please call us via 101 quoting serial 0798 of 31/12/12."
