Police report - Ref: PR40959 / 2012
Time: 12.50pm
Location: Gossops Green
Incident: Cash snatched from elderly man in Crawley
Police are seeking a trio of thieves who stole cash in a wallet from an elderly and unwell man in a Crawley street. At about 12.50pm today the 71-year old local man was walking home along an alleyway by St Albans Church in Gossops Green when he was approached by two men and a woman who engaged him in conversation and distracted him while one of them cut a hole in the bottom of the bag he was carrying and stole his wallet which contained some £160 cash and personal documents. The suspects are described as possibly being of Filipino appearance but further details are not available at present. Police are investigating the possibility that they had spotted him leaving a building society in the town centre shortly before the theft.
A Sussex Police spokesman said; "This was a particularly despicable theft from a vulnerable elderly man, who was very shaken and upset by the experience. If you saw anything on Monday that might help, please call us right away on 101 quoting serial 0726 of 19/11. You can also call independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
Police continue to remind people using banks, building societies or cash machines to be as discreet as possible about any withdrawals and to keep the cash safe and secure.

Incident: EIGHT PEOPLE RESCUED FROM FIRE IN CRAWLEY FLATS
Eight people, including two children, have been rescued by fire crews this morning following a fire at a block of flats in Crawley.
West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service was called to the flats on Broadfield Place just after 7.00am this morning after a fire broke out in the communal stairwell of the 3-storey block.
Two separate 999 calls were made to the Command and Mobilising Centre from people trapped in their flats by the thick smoke filling the stairwell. Remaining on the phone, Fire Control staff calmly gave vital fire survival guidance to the callers whilst simultaneously dispatching fire engines to the scene. Occupants were advised to stay inside their flats, close the door, use towels or sheets to block any gaps and open a window.
Fire crews from Crawley were at the flats within minutes, followed by additional crews from Horley and Horsham. The first firefighters on scene used triple extension ladders to rescue five people from the first floor windows, while a further three people were led to safety through the central stairwell. Meanwhile, firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the block of flats and quickly located the fire, extinguishing it using two hosereels and a covering jet so the premises could be safely evacuated. One man in his 20s was treated for mild smoke inhalation at the scene by paramedics but did not go to hospital.
An investigation into the cause of the fire has now begun.

Police report - Ref: PR41033 / 2012
Time: 8.45pm
Location: Sompting Road, Lancing
Incident: Appeal for information after wheelchair-bound man targeted
Police are appealing for information after a wheelchair-bound man was targeted in a robbery in Lancing.
At around 8.45pm tonight the victim, a man in his 50s, was at his home in Sompting Road when he received a knock on his front door. Answering it he found a man claiming to be an undercover police officer who needed access to the property. The victim didn't believe him and told him to leave. Another man then appeared and entered the property, knocking the victim out of his wheelchair and stole his mobile phone. They then left and the victim called for assistance. The victim hit his head during the incident and as a result suffered a small cut.
Police are considering whether this incident is linked to two similar offences. In Cokeham Lane, Sompting, at around 7.30pm on Monday 26 November two men called at the door of a man in his 70s claiming to be police. They pushed their way into the property, causing the man to fall to the floor, and stole cash from the property and then left. Although shaken, the man was not injured during the incident.
In Sompting Road, Lancing, during the evening of Monday 12 November an elderly resident received a call from two men. After they left the man realised that a small amount of money had been taken. The callers are described as in their late teens.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Sussex Police on 101 quoting serial 1582 of 28/11 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

FRIDAY 30 NOVEMBER - 2012

Police report - Ref: PR41042 / 2012
Time: -
Location: Balcombe
Incident: Increased concern for missing Darren Brown
The public are being urged to call police with any possible sightings of missing 24-year-old Darren Brown as police become increasingly concerned for his safety.
Extensive searches are continuing today for Darren, who was last seen heading towards Crawley at about 3pm after leaving his home address in Balcombe on Wednesday afternoon, 28 November - see here.
Darren has now been missing for two nights when temperatures have dropped to below freezing and Police are extremely concerned for his welfare. He was not dressed appropriately for the weather, just wearing Chelsea-style shorts, a white jacket, T-shirt and flip flops. There was a possible sighting of Darren this morning at about 6.30am in the area of the Cowdray Arms in Balcombe Road, but despite officers immediately searching the area he has still not been found. Darren is believed to have been distressed when he left his home address following an argument and his family are desperate to know that he is safe and well.
His family have spoken of their concern as darkness falls for a third night since he was last seen. A statement from them said- "We just want to know that Darren is safe and well. This will be the third night since he went missing and we're desperate for him to come home. "We are so grateful to all the volunteers and the police who have been tirelessly looking for Darren and urge members of the public to keep searching, whether on foot or in a vehicle - if you think you see him then please please call police as soon as possible.
Chief Inspector Jon Hull, District Commander for Mid Sussex, said: "The temperatures are dropping below freezing at night and despite extensive searches throughout the day we are no closer to finding Darren and are becoming increasingly concerned for him. "A number of volunteers have been assisting specialist search officers in the hunt for Darren, and we are extremely grateful for the help they have been providing. Members of the community have also given fanatastic support by searching their local area. "The police will continue to do everything they can to find Darren and this includes engaging the use of the helicopter and specially trained dogs. "I cannot stress enough how concerned we are - it is vital that we find Darren as soon as possible so he doesn't have to be outside and alone in such freezing conditions."
Anyone with information is urged to call police immediately on 101, quoting serial 0941 of 28 November.
