Police report - Ref: PR40558 / 2012 Location: Sussex Incident: Two more arrests over Ford industrial site death Two men, a 62-year old from Wickham, Hampshire, and a 26-year old from Fareham, Hampshire, were arrested on Wednesday 3 October on suspicion of manslaughter by gross negligence, following the death of 66-year-old Lindsay Campbell, from Cunningham Road, Waterlooville, Hampshire, in an incident at South Coast Skips, Rudford Industrial Estate, Ford, on Wednesday 25 July. They were subsequently released on police bail until 6 December. On Friday 7 September a 47-year-old man from Birdham near Chichester and a 50-year-old man from Bognor Regis were also arrested on suspicion of the same offence. They were subsequently released on police bail until 8 November. The investigation is being carried out by detectives from the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team with the support of the Health and Safety Executive, and police reports are being submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service. At around 7.15pm a man entered Bet Fred in Brougham Road, Worthing, and threatened a male member of staff with a knife. The man demanded money. The suspect ran from the store without any money after becoming aware that there was a customer in the shop. He ran east along the road and then got onto a small bike. No-one was injured as a result of the incident. The suspect is described as white, 20 to 30-years-old, 5'8" to 5'10", of average build, with a southern accent. He was wearing a black jacket, black woollen gloves and dark grey balaclava. He was carrying a knife and a green plastic bag. Detectives are linking this incident with a robbery at Ladbrokes in Rowlands Road on Tuesday evening. Police report - Ref: PR40566 / 2012 Location: Bognor Incident: Three warrants executed in Bognor Three search warrants were excuted at addresses in Bognor this morning in a further bid to crack down on drug offences being committed in the town. The operation was led by Arun district police and the addresses in central Bognor were targetted following information received about illegal activity. Emergency services attended the scene but sadly the driver of the vehicle was declared dead at the scene. Police said the A23 was closed on both carriageways for a short time to allow the air ambulance to land. The northbound carriageway has now reopened. The southbound closed for over four hours, but it is now open. This was necessary to safely facilitate the specialist recovery of the large vehicle and its load. Police report - Ref: PR40582 / 2012 Time: 2.30pm Location: Worthing Incident: Attempted car theft in Worthing A good samaritan who stopped to help a man on the floor nearly had his car stolen. At 2.30pm in Lansdowne Road, Worthing, a man was seen lying on the ground and appeared to be in need of an ambulance. A passing motorist stopped to offer help but the man got up and ran to the driver's car and tried to drive it away. He was only stopped by the fact that the driver had taken his keys with him. The suspect then asked for the keys but after he was refused, ran away towards the seafront. He is described as in his late 40s, of medium build and greying hair, a short beard, wearing a grey top with a zip up front, dark jeans and white trainers. Police said that this incident left a well intentioned person shaken and upset and would ask residents to be mindful of this style of theft. Shortly before 10.40pm a red Vauxhall Zafira travelling eastbound and a pedal cyclist collided on the A27 Arundel Road near to Meadow Way. The cyclist, a 35-year-old local man, received a serious head injury and was taken to St Richards Hospital for treatment. The driver of the Vauxhall, a man in his 30s from Worthing, was not injured. The collision between a Yamaha motorbike and a green Ford Fiesta happened on the B2135 at 8.15pm. The rider of the motorbike, a 51-year-old man from Crawley, was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton with serious injuries. The driver of the Ford Fiesta was suffered shock and whiplash but was not taken to hospital. The driver of a third vehicle, a black Mercedes, was uninjured. At 8.45pm a man went into Grande Wines in Nyewood Lane, Bognor, threatened the assistant with a knife and tried to force her to open the till. However she and another member of staff resisted and the man fled empty handed. Police report - Ref: PR40761 / 2012 Time: 1.30am Location: A27, Arundel Road Incident: Pedestrian dies at scene of road traffic collision on A27 A 52-year-old East Grinstead man has sadly died following a collision with a blue Rover car on the A27, Arundel Road, Crossbush, in the early hours of this morning. He has been named as John Russell Gayfer, of Woodlands Road. Police and emergency services were called to the collision on the west bound carriageway at 1.30am. The pedestrian, died from his injuries at the scene. The driver of the Rover, a 24-year-old man from East Sussex, was treated for shock. Police are appealing for anyone who may have seen a man walking along the A27 in the Crossbush area or a Rover 75 prior to the collision, to please contact them quoting Operation Parham. The west bound carriageway was closed for about four hours whilst the casualty was attended to and officers from the Roads Policing Unit examined the scene. A black Ford KA and a Mercedes E Class saloon collided shortly before 4pm. No injuries were caused as a result of the collision. An allegation has been made that the driver of the Ford KA was assaulted at the scene leaving him with minor injuries immediately after the collision.
