UPDATE ON CRAWLEY FIRE DEATH
The woman who died at her home in Banks Road, Crawley, on New Years Eve has been identified as 51-year-old Maria Woodhead.
Forensic investigators have now established that there was not an explosion as first thought, but that a small fire, contained within one room at the house, may have contributed to Miss Woodheads death. However, the exact cause of her death has not yet been established, but it is not being treated as suspicious.

Man jailed for 11 years for Crawley knife attack
Police in Crawley have thanked local people for their support during an investigation which resulted in a man who attacked two others with a large kitchen knife at a birthday party being sentenced to 11 years imprisonment.
Thomas Mahasoh, 41, a waiter, of Stratford Road, Hockley Heath, Solihull, was sentenced at Lewes Crown Court. He had pleaded not guilty at the start of the trial but changed his plea to guilty part way through, of two counts of grievous bodily harm.
An 18-year-old man suffered a stab wound to his stomach which was initially life threatening, and a man aged 20 was stabbed in the leg after a fight broke out at the party being held near the Crawley Lawn Tennis Club in Hazelwick Avenue at 3.45am on 7 July last year. All three had been at the party, held by a relative of Mahasoh, when a fight started and spilled out into the street where the two were stabbed.
Detective Inspector Mark Cullimore said; "Mahasoh quickly fled the scene and soon afterwards drove home to Solihull, but was later identified with the help of some brave witnesses who contacted the police. Thankfully both victims have recovered. The sentence reflects the seriousness of the offences he committed and we are very grateful for the assistance of local people particularly in the local Zimbabwean community, whose understanding was invaluable. They can be re-assured by the outcome that police will always take this type of incident seriously and will work to support local law-abiding people."

POLICE report - Ref: PR44398 / 2014
Time: 9.20am
Location: Manor Royal industrial estate, Crawley
Incident: Cigarettes stolen in Crawley delivery van robbery
Thousands of pounds worth of cigarettes were stolen in a delivery van robbery in Manor Royal industrial estate, Crawley.
At about 9.20am the driver of a P & H delivery lorry was preparing to unload catering at The Office, Virgin Atlantic, when three men jumped into the back of the lorry and stole bags of cigarettes. The driver was in the back of the cream-coloured delivery lorry preparing to unload the delivery when a white Mercedes Vito van pulled alongside and three men got out, leaving a fourth man in the driver seat. The three men, two with northern accents and one with an Eastern European accent, jumped into the back of the lorry and threatened the driver who was made to go to the far corner and turn away from them.
They removed a number of clear plastic bags containing thousands of pounds worth of wholesale cigarettes that were due to be delivered elsewhere. They then drove on to Fleming Way and left the area.
Detective Sergeant Jonathan Pink, West Sussex CID at Crawley, said: "No weapons were used but the driver suffered minor injuries from being pushed around in the lorry. He didn't require medical treatment although he was quite obviously shaken by the ordeal. Looking at CCTV we know the white Mercedes Vito van was being driven around the estate a while before. I would ask that anyone who was in the area at the time and saw the men acting suspiciously before the robbery, at the time or afterwards, driving away from the scene to contact West Sussex CID at Crawley on 101, quoting serial 211 13/1."

POLICE report - Ref: PR44405 / 2014
Incident: Spate of collisions on icy roads across Sussex
Emergency services have been dealing with a spate of road traffic collisions across Sussex today after an early morning drop in temperatures created treacherous icy conditions on many roads.
On the Chelwood Gate Road between Nutley and Chelwood Common the driver of a Land Rover Discovery was trapped in his vehicle after it left the road and collided with a telegraph pole shortly before 8am. He suffered pelvic injuries and fire and rescue crews were called in to free him. The Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance also stood by to assist. The man, 58, was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton. His injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.
On the B2141 at Chilgrove, near Chichester, at least 10 vehicles were involved in separate crashes after coming to grief on sheet ice. No injuries were reported.
The dual carriageway B2070 London Road near Rake, on the Sussex-Hampshire border, also turned icy, and at least five vehicles left the road and collided with trees or the central reservation. No injuries were reported.
Three vehicles collided on the B2133 Harbolets Road at 7.50am, leading to it being closed between its junctions with Broadford Bridge Road and the B2139 Coolham Road while emergency services attended. All three drivers were reported to have suffered minor injuries. Again, sheet ice was present.
At 8am a woman driver was left with chest and abdominal pains and a man driving another vehicle suffered shock after they collided on Dunsfold Road just to the west of Plaistow.
Two cars left the road and collided with hedges at Barnsfold Farm, Loxwood, near Billingshurst, at around 9.15am but no injuries were reported.
At 8.52am a car skidded into a ditch after encountering ice near Maple Farm, Marches Road , between the A29 Bognor Road and Kingsfold. The woman driver was unhurt.
At 8.36am a woman and her son suffered minor leg injuries after their car skidded on black ice outside Conies Farm on Maplehurst Road north of its junction with the A272 Cowfold Road and went into a hedge. They were out of their car when a second vehicle collided with it, again having skidded on ice.
Police have warned motorists to beware of sudden changes in temperature which can lead to ice forming on road surfaces, particularly now that many are damp from recent rainfall. Drivers are advised to slow down, use controls sensitively and to leave plenty of room between themselves and other vehicles.

Other fires might be linked to Littlehampton fatal arson
Police are exploring links with another fire and use of white spirit within hours of the fatal fire in Littlehampton in September 2013.
Around 1am on September 12 last year, a fire was started behind the front door of a house converted into flats in South Terrace, and a 24-year-old man, Terry Davies, sadly died in his flat as a result.
Ten hours earlier in nearby Baysford Road, white spirit was also found to have been poured around the front door of a home at around 3pm. Later, around 10.50pm, a car was set alight in Granville Road, only short period of time before the fatal fire in South Terrace.
Detective Inspector John Wallace, from the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team, said: "These three events have been linked at this time as they happened within hours of each other and were only a matter of a few streets from each other in Littlehampton. We are hoping to speak to any witnesses or people who can give any information at all about either the two fires or what happened in Baysford Road. A young man lost his life that night because someone started a fire and we need to find out who is responsible. We are appealing to anyone who may hold any information, however small, which will help us with our enquiries and bring justice to Terrys family.".

Bosham murder inquiry - Do you recognise this hammer?
Detectives have released these photos of a hammer which they believe is the weapon used to kill Valerie Graves in Bosham.
It was found in Bosham by the search team working on the murder inquiry. Miss Graves was discovered dead in a ground-floor bedroom on the morning of Monday 30 December at the house in Smugglers Lane she was looking after with three other
members of her family, while the owners were away. She died from significant head and facial injuries.
Detective Superintendent Nick May from Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team said: "We need to know the origins of this hammer. We need people to check if they have lost such a hammer or had one stolen in the period leading up to the murder. We would also ask police officers, prison staff, probation officers and professionals who work in mental health, if they have dealt with anyone who has talked about causing someone harm with a hammer, to let us know. The hammer is about 30cm in length. It has a distinctive red and black handle and is embossed with the words Forge Steel with a picture of an outline of an anvil."

23-year-old charged with murder of Portuguese man in Crawley
A 23-year-old man has been charged with the murder of a Portuguese man in Crawley.
Joao Esteves, 45, from the Lisbon area of Portugal, was found with serious head injuries at 3.25am on Sunday, 19 January, in an alleyway between Stephenson Way and Haslett Avenue East. He later died.
Daniel Palmer, of Maunsell Park, Station Hill, Crawley, has been charged with murder and remanded in custody to appear at Crawley Magistrates Court tomorrow morning. Two men aged 33 and 48 and a 22-year-old woman, all from Crawley, who were also arrested on Sunday, have been released on bail until 12 March while officers carry out further inquiries.
Detective Inspector Sean Kelly, of Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team, said: "Although we have charged Daniel Palmer with killing Mr Esteves, we still need the public's help with details of the movements of Palmer and Mr Esteves that night. We believe Mr Esteves was attacked along Haslett Avenue East cycle path, opposite Three Bridges football club, where two footpaths meet at a pedestrian crossing. We think many people will have driven past the path either during or after the attack and may have seen something. They may not have come forward yet because they have not realised the gravity of what has happened there or did not realise a crime had been committed at all.
"We now need anyone who drove past the scene between 2.30am and 3.25am on Sunday to contact us so we can speak to them. You may not think that what you know is relevant but please call us so we can check - it could be vital to our investigation."

Man convicted of murdering Debbie Levey in East Ashling
A West Sussex man has been convicted of murdering a woman with whom he had been in a relationship that she sought to end.
Phillip Brown, a driver in his forties, of Selsey, West Sussex has been convicted at Lewes Crown Court today, of the murder of Debbie Levey, 44, whose body was found at her home, Cherry Tree Cottage on the B2178 in East Ashling, West Sussex, on Monday morning 28 January 2013. Sentencing was adjourned to Monday 3 February.
Detective Superintendent Ian Pollard, of the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team, said: "This was a complex and painstaking investigation. We worked very closely with forensic scientists and the pathologist, as well as with the Crown Prosecution Service and our counsel, Mark Dennis QC, to show that Brown's claim never to have been in Debbie's home on the day of her death was a lie. He evidently thought he could mask his evil act of smothering Debbie with a string of distractions, false clues and stories. But we were eventually able to show, to the satisfaction of the jury, that he was indeed the killer, and justice has now been done for Debbie, and her family. We pay tribute to her family, all of whom have borne the ordeal of the past 12 months with great dignity and fortitude. In particular the court evidence of Debbie's 17-year old daughter was clearly compelling."

Distraction thefts in supermarket car parks
Police are warning motorists after a woman was targeted by distraction thieves in a Tesco's car park.
The woman had finished her shopping on Thursday morning, 30 January, when a man knocked on her car window and pointed out a long nail in her tyre. She got out to investigate and he took withdrew it from the tyre. It was later at home that she found two bank cards had been taken from her handbag that had been in the car and £300 taken from each.
Sgt Julian Williams said: "It seems the woman was distracted while another person stole her bank cards. I urge people that when someone grabs your attention, for whatever reason, know that your bag and wallet are secure. It is possible that someone saw her enter her pin number at the checkout. We would advise always to cover the screen when inputting the number and realise that thieves can sometimes act in pairs or groups. We are investigating this incident and want people to be aware."
The man she saw is described as Eastern European, slim, with collar length light brown hair, blue eyes and wearing a beige coat.
On 22 January there were two similar incidents in Tesco car parks in Hailsham and Uckfield where an Eastern European woman and man tricked the drivers in checking their tyres for nails and a purse and debit card were stolen.
