POLICE report - Ref: PR44042 / 2013
Incident: Police launch crackdown on rogue lorry drivers
Lorry drivers are to be targeted in a crackdown on smuggling in the south east.
Operation Hedgehunter is being launched in Sussex to tackle the importation into the county of drugs, guns, illegal tobacco, dangerous fake alcohol and sometimes people. Crime gangs running haulage firms are believed to be responsible for smuggling illegal items into the country hidden inside regular loads.
Operation Hedgehunter is being run by Crimestoppers and Sussex Police. It aims to encourage people working in the haulage industry and members of the public to report on hauliers who are operating outside of the law and industry regulations.
From today police will be carrying out highly visible roadside examinations of heavy goods vehicles being driven across the county to check if they are carrying any illegal loads or have committed any traffic offences.
Police state that- "The vast majority of lorry drivers are decent, law-abiding people who are simply trying to do their job and make a living legally. They are not able to compete on a level playing field because some of their rivals are using the proceeds from organised crime to expand their business unfairly. We aren't trying to put extra restrictions on lorry drivers. We're trying to make their lives easier by getting their criminal colleagues off the roads - and we need their help to do it."
Law enforcement agencies and border officials have successfully targeted hauliers from all over the country and Europe in the past with millions of pounds of drugs seized and offenders being given lengthy prison sentences.
In September 2012 lorry driver Stephen Newland from Burscough, Lancashire, was jailed for eight and a half years after UK Border Force officials found 45kg of cocaine worth £8 million hidden in a false bulkhead in the driver's cab.
If you know anything about smuggling in Sussex call 101,

Alternatively, call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

A fire in Littlehampton where a man died is now being treated as arson and murder.

Terry Davies, 24, who lived at the property, which was divided into flats, sadly died in the fire. He lived in a flat at the rear of the property and post-mortem results showed he died from smoke inhalation. The fire was originally believed to have been started by an electrical fault; however, on further investigation by West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, it was established white spirit had been used to start the fire. As this is now being treated as arson and therefore murder, the investigation was passed to Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team.

Mum of man killed in Littlehampton fire makes an emotional appeal
The mum of a man who died in a fire in Littlehampton has made an emotional appeal to anyone with information, however small.
Terry Davies, 24, died in the fire at his flat in South Terrace on September 12 which is now being treated as arson and murder.
His mum Mitzi Price, who lives in Rustington, has been devastated by the lost of her son. She said: "Even if anyone has the smallest piece of information, just a little snippet, all of it can add up and if anyone can think of anything from that night it could help. All I keep thinking is why? Why would someone do that? Why Terry? I think of that all the time. Terry, who had learning difficulties, had lived in the one-bedroom flat on the seafront for 16 months and this was the first time he had properly lived away from home. The flat was a typical mans flat, a bit messy, he was a typical bloke really. I was always like a typical mum, worried about him but he was fine and when he got with
Terry with girlfriend Kerry
Kerry that's when his life started. He met his girlfriend Kerry, when he started working at Littlehampton Morrisons in February this year. He was going to ask her to marry him on her birthday in November, that was so sad as it should have been a very happy day. Terry was so popular at work, they've planted a tree for him and they plan put a bench up at his old school, Palatine, as a memorial, where he had many happy days. From when he was a little boy, he would offer everyone his sweets and there would be none left for him, that's just what he was like. He always found it hard to learn and always saw things as black and white but he was a real people person.
"He liked working at Morrisons but really he wanted to be a driver, driving coaches or HGVs. He loved driving, he would drive around for the sake of driving. When he first started working at Morrisons, he saved up to buy himself a blue Saxo. Mitzi said the lead up to Christmas, Terry's favourite time of year, is very hard. His younger brother Jason, who will be 14 this weekend, said he was close to his half-brother."
Detective Inspector John Wallace, from the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team, said: "A young man lost his life that night because someone started that fire in the property, a fire which could have cost the lives of the other occupants who had to be rescued by firefighters. We need to find who was responsible. We are appealing to anyone who may hold any information which will help us with our enquiries and bring justice to Terry's family."

Incident: Fake police telephone scam operating in Sussex
An alert taxi driver who was aware of a phone scam stopped an elderly woman from handing over £20,000.
He had picked up the woman as passenger and asked her where she was going. She said she was going to her bank to withdraw a large amount of cash to give a courier. He became suspicious having heard of a fake police telephone scam operating in the area and persuaded her to report it to police.
The scam caller has been a woman claiming to be from Hammersmith Police Station advised that they had arrested someone who had in their possession a copy of your debit card. They have then asked that you dial 999 or call your bank, but the scammer stays on the phone line and intercepts the telephone call. Ultimately they will instruct you to withdraw money from your account and will arrange courier collection. They say it's a highly secret operation and is not to be spoken about.
If you receive one of these calls, simply put the phone down and notify Police by using a separate phone line or mobile phone or contact your local Police via the Sussex Police Website at contact.centre@sussex.pnn.police.uk

Drink-driver jailed for killing cyclist
A drink-driver who knocked down and killed a cyclist has been jailed for six years.
Samuel Kirk, 26, crossed double white lines to overtake a car on the A29 at Codmore Hill near Pulborough and hit Jennifer Hossack who was on the other side of the road. Kirk lost control of his Citroen Xsara and crashed at 8pm on 27 September. He then fled the scene.
Miss Hossack, 27, from Kingsfold, died of her injuries.
Kirk, of no fixed address, was already disqualified from driving and had been drinking when he got behind the wheel and struck Miss Hossack. He appeared at Lewes Crown Court today where he was convicted of causing death by dangerous driving and was jailed for six years. Kirk was also banned from driving for three years and will have to pass an extended test before he is allowed to have a driving licence again.
In her summing up, Judge Shani Barnes said that he had ruined the lives of the Hossack family when he took the decision to drive the car on that evening. She said she hoped that the sentence sent out a message to others who decide to get in a car and drive when they have had a drink.

SATURDAY 21 DECEMBER 2013

POLICE report - Ref: PR44249 / 2013
Time: 2.20am
Location: Brighton Beach
Incident: Woman swept out to sea
Police and Coastguards have been searching for a woman who was seen to be swept out to sea from the beach at Brighton at 2.20am this morning.
The woman had been walking along the beach between West Pier and Palace Pier with a man who she knew, and with whom she just been in a seafront club, when she ran into the water and was almost immediately swept off by a large wave. The man tried to grab her but was unable to drag her to safety. Police officers arrived within minutes and together with club staff and her friend tried to help, but the woman was being washed further away and was inaccessible due to the very heavy sea conditions.
Coastguards swiftly assisted the search by land and sea, together with the RNLI All-Weather Lifeboat based at Shoreham, but she has not been recovered and the immediate search has been discontinued at this time.
The woman is believed to be 36, and living in Brighton. Her reason for running into the water is not clear at present but the incident is not being treated as suspicious. Next of kin are being contacted by specially trained family liaison officers.
Police said emergency services searched for several hours in very difficult and dangerous weather but have been unable to locate the woman. The sea was very rough indeed overnight, and urge people to be very careful and stay away from the waters edge anywhere along the coast when the weather is so bad.

RNLI Shoreham Lifeboat SHOREHAM LIFEBOAT
Time: 2.40am
Incident: Woman swept off beach
Shoreham all weather lifeboat was launched to a search for a woman who had gone into the sea off Brighton between the West and Palace Piers. The coastguard mobile units and the coastguard helicopter also joined the search but it was too rough for Brighton lifeboat to launch. The lifeboat was moved in as close as possible to the shoreline where the woman was believed to have gone in and then searched between the two piers in gale force conditions. Despite the best efforts of the search teams, and with the tide ebbing and the depth of the water, the lifeboat had to move further out to search between the piers. After searching for three hours the lifeboat was stood down but the mobile coastguards continued to search along the shoreline until daybreak but nothing was found.
Shoreham lifeboat coxswain Steve Smith said: "The stormy weather conditions meant the search was difficult. We got as close into the breaking surf as we could. Despite our best efforts, we were unable to find the woman. Our thoughts are with her family and friends."

POLICE report - Ref: PR44298 / 2013
Location: Linchmere Common - off B2131 Liphook Road
Incident: Dogs attack terrier and owner on Linchmere Common, north of Midhurst
A couple walking their Yorkshire Terrier on Linchmere Common - just off the B2131 Liphook Road between Liphook and Haslemere - at about noon were attacked by two large, muscular sandy-coloured dogs.
The dogs burst from the undergrowth and set upon the terrier. When it was picked up by its owner he was bitten also, and the terrier suffered bites to its belly and a hind leg. A woman appeared who led the large dogs away. She was white, in her late 30s to early 40s with mid-length, sandy blonde hair. She came from the direction of Danley Lane.
Police would like to hear from anyone who saw the incident or noticed the two large dogs with their owner. She herself is urged to come forward. They are asked to phone Sussex Police on 101 quoting serial 0352 of 29/12.
