The family of William Richardson said: "William was a beautiful boy and will always be in our hearts." Teenager charged with causing death by dangerous driving following Slinfold crash - Sunday 2 December 2013 SEE ABOVE SUSSEX POLICE report - Ref: PR46806 / 2014 Friday 12 September 2014 Teenager guilty of dangerous driving in double death crash, A264 Slinfold At Lewes Crown Court on Friday 12 September, Brett Hewson, 19, of Coombe Hill, Billingshurst, was acquitted of causing the death by dangerous driving of two other teenagers in a road traffic collision on the A264 Five Oaks Road, near Fulfords Hill, Slinfold, on 5 July 2013. But he was convicted of dangerous driving, ordered to pay fines and costs of £250, banned from driving for 12 months and told he must take an extended driving test before regaining his licence. William Richardson, 18, of Hayes Lane, Slinfold, was killed when the Peugeot 306 he was driving left the road and struck a tree. Passenger Asa Caudill, 19, of Arun Road, Billingshurst, suffered serious injuries and was taken to St George's Hospital, London, for specialist treatment, but died early the next day. Another passenger in the Peugeot, an 18-year-old man, suffered wrist and shoulder injuries for which he was detained in hospital overnight, and a third passenger, a 17-year-old girl, suffered slight injuries. The court heard the Peugeot was travelling at nearly 70mph while negotiating a bend in a 40mph zone. Earlier the car had left the Billingshurst area together with an Opel Astra being driven by Hewson. Both cars had been travelling at speed, up the A29 and then down the A264 towards Slinfold. Witness testimony highlighted excessive speed and dangerous overtaking manoeuvres, two of which almost resulted in head-on collisions. The prosecution contended that it was a case of two cars racing on public roads. Speaking after the hearing, Sergeant Alan Spicer, of Sussex's road policing unit, said: "There are absolutely no winners in this case. A community has been devastated by the deaths of two popular young men who had their lives ahead of them, and I doubt their families will ever come to terms with their loss."

Emergency services were called at 3.40pm and discovered the body of a 51-year-old man and a woman aged 30. Their deaths are currently being treated as unexplained but are not being treated as suspicious. Detective Inspector Rob Walker said: "Despite some media reports, we have not found any evidence of the drug crystal meth and no evidence any drug was being produced. This speculation has caused distress to the families of the deceased. We are continuing to work with the coroner's officers to establish a cause of death. Due to a concern that there could be a presence of a chemical related to one or both of the bodies and to ensure a safe working environment a hazardous response team from the ambulance service attended the scene on Friday night as part of the investigation. This is normal procedure to ensure the safety of the public and emergency staff working inside the premises. The property was rechecked and there was no evidence of a noxious substance or pollution within the environment of the flat. SUSSEX POLICE report - Ref: PR50914 / 2015 Report received: 29 December 2015 Ford absconder Derek Passmore, recaptured A man who absconded from Ford Prison more than two-and-a-half years ago found himself back behind bars for Christmas after he was arrested in Hove on Christmas Eve 2015. Derek Passmore, now 50, was recaptured after failing to return to HMP Ford on 22 June, 2013 whilst released on temporary licence. He absconded after being sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of an acquaintance in London in 1997. PC Lewis Dines of the Chichester-based team leading the investigations on all absconders from HMP Ford said: "Passmore was released on a temporary licence from Ford prison and failed to return by the end of the allotted period. A significant amount of work involving teams in Sussex and colleagues in the Metropolitan Police Service was undertaken, but he maintained a low profile and remained evasive. However, we recently received information about his whereabouts, which led to his successful and uneventful recapture in the Hove area on Thursday 24 December." [2015] Passmore has been charged with escaping lawful custody and has been detained at HMP Lewes. He will serve the remainder of his original sentence and also be sentenced for failing to return to return to HMP Ford. The dual carriageway has been closed after a lorry travelling eastbound hit a slow-moving people carrier, turned over and went through the central reservation. The westbound carriageway of the A27 has been blocked by the overturned lorry while debris caused by the collision and the striking of the central barriers has forced the closure of the eastbound side as well. Motorists are urged to find an alternative route as the road will be closed until at least 5pm and traffic is likely to be very heavy for a period afterwards. The A27 is closed between Hangleton and Homebush. It is believed that the dark coloured people carrier was travelling slowly, possibly with its hazard warning lights flashing, about half a mile east of the Southwick Tunnel when it was hit by a lorry shortly after 1pm. The 49-year-old male driver of the people carrier suffered suspected leg and chest injuries and was taken to Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton for treatment. A 79-year-old male passenger suffered serious head injuries and was flown to Southampton General Hospital. Officers are keen to speak to anyone who saw the people carrier travelling slowly or the lorry before the accident or who saw the collision happen. He was taken by air ambulance to Southampton General Hospital with head injuries, and his condition was initially assessed as serious but not life threatening. However his condition then worsened and sadly he died in hospital on Tuesday afternoon 30 July. The 44-year-old driver of lorry, from Doncaster, was treated at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton for minor injuries and was then arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury through dangerous driving. He was later released on bail until 16 September while police enquiries continue. Ernest Humphrey, 79, of Mackie Avenue, Hassocks, died after the black Vauxhall Zafira he was travelling in was struck by the lorry of Andrew May on the A27 close to the Southwick Tunnel. May, of Truro Avenue, Doncaster, pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving when he appeared at Chichester Crown Court. He was found not guilty of a separate charge of causing death by dangerous driving. The 45-year-old was driving the eastbound carriageway of the A27 shortly after 1pm on 25 July 2013 when he looked away from the road to reach for a bar of chocolate. He looked up as his lorry struck the Vauxhall before crossing the central reservation and overturning, blocking the westbound carriageway. The eastbound carriageway also had to be closed while the injured men in the Vauxhall were rescued and the barrier was repaired. The 49-year-old man driving the Vauxhall, from Hassocks, suffered head, leg and chest injuries and was taken to Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton for treatment. Mr Humphrey, who was a passenger in the car and also from Hassocks, was flown to Southampton General Hospital but died of his injuries on 30 July.
