SUSSEX POLICE report - Ref: PR46373 / 2014 Location: Bridgewater Close, Billingshurst Incident: Billingshurst Woman dies of suspected heroin overdose At half-past midnight, in response to a call from ambulance personnel, police attended a flat in Bridgewater Close, Billingshurst. The coroner has been informed, Detective Inspector Dave Wardley Wilkins, of the Sussex Police priority crime team, said- "This is one of three deaths in West Sussex in as many days, all of which are believed to have involved drugs. West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service was called to the two-storey block of flats on Manor Way in Elmer at 12.53am this morning after the occupier of the ground floor flat, a man in his 50s who had been drinking, fell asleep leaving a pan burning on the hob. Fortunately, the flat was fitted with an working smoke detector, which alerted the occupier of a neighbouring flat to the developing fire. The quick-acting neighbour forced entry to the ground floor flat and rescued the sleeping occupier before raising the alarm. Both men were later taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation. A crew from Bognor Fire Station was on the scene within minutes of the alarm being raised and saw smoke and flames pouring from the flat's windows and door, which had blown out from the intensity of the fire. Three additional fire crews were immediately requested while the initial firefighting operations got underway. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus carried out a search of the whole block of flats but thankfully all the occupiers had already safely evacuated. The blaze was then quickly brought under control and extinguished using jets and hoses. The flat sustained considerable fire, smoke and heat damage. Two neighbouring flats were also damaged by fire and smoke. Incident Commander and Green Watch Manager from Bognor Fire Station, Jon Etherington, said afterwards: "This man had a very lucky escape. Had it not been for the neighbour's brave actions, this may very well have ended in tragedy. While we would remind people not to put themselves in harm's way by entering a property they believe is on fire, we would urge people to act if they hear a smoke alarm going off for any length of time in a neighbouring property. Don't ignore it, call 999, you may just save a life. This is not an isolated incident. Cooking is by far the most common cause of house fire we attend. We would ask people to think twice about getting the pan out if they are very tired or have been drinking; it really is a recipe for disaster. Don't take the risk of putting the hob or grill on; just make something that doesn't need to be cooked instead. We're very thankful that the man's home was fitted with a working smoke alarm, although he wasn't roused by it, his neighbour was and that made a life-saving difference. If you have an older or vulnerable relative or neighbour who hasn't got a working smoke alarm, then please encourage them to get in touch with us for a free Home Fire Safety Check." Officers from the roads policing unit and the Highways Agency will be accompanying the vehicle from the A23 south to the A27 and then east onto the A22 and A259 to its destination just off King Offa Way in Bexhill. Minor roads connecting to the A27 and the A259 between these points will be temporarily closed as the vehicle passes them. The vehicle will begin its journey on the A23 at 5.30am and will take several hours to get to Bexhill. Previous experience suggests the journey will be completed well before midday and that the impact on traffic in the area will be minimal. Saturday morning has been chosen because at that time the roads will be at their quietest and the minimum disruption should be caused although drivers should prepare for their journeys to take longer than usual at that time. SUSSEX POLICE report - Ref: PR46991 / 2014 Five arrested after items found in Worthing pond linked to burglaries Five people have been arrested by police over a haul of stolen items found dumped in a Worthing pond. More than 850 items have been recovered by Sussex Police specialist search unit from a pond in Whitebeam Wood, Durrington, after the haul was discovered by a woman walking her dog on 23 July. If they have been stolen, they can be returned to their owners and officers may get more evidence that could help catch and prosecute those responsible for taking them. Thanks to work by detectives and calls from members of the public, officers have been able to link items from the pond to six burglaries committed in West Sussex over the last 14 months and return the possessions to their owners. Four men aged 26, 24, 20 and 18 and a 17-year-old boy have been arrested and questioned over the burglaries and released on bail until 2 October. Detective Constable Emma Fields said: "We believe most of the items in the pond were stolen in the last 18 months or so before being dumped there, possibly because the burglars could not sell them. Most of the victims who we have been able to return items to have been retired and the jewellery such as watches, necklaces and rings that we have been able to give them back had great sentimental value. In some cases they were 21st birthday presents, items they were given by their parents or family heirlooms. We are still very keen to reunite the remaining property with its owners so I would urge anyone who has been burgled over the last 18 months or so to visit the website to see if they can spot their items."
