Fire & Rescue - Call Ref: 1360 Time: 02:34-03:02 Location: REAR OF HOUSES - TREFOIL CRESCENT, BROADFIELD, CRAWLEY Incident: FIRE involving rubbish bin and spread to 2 metres of fencing and garden shed - shed 5% damaged by fire - 2HRs used by WSF&RS - deliberate ignition - WrLx2 Crawley SUSSEX POLICE report - Ref: PR42770 / 2014 ISSUED ON BEHALF OF SOUTH EAST REGIONAL ORGANISED CRIME UNIT Man jailed for fraud
A Bordon man has been sent to prison after admitting 10 offences of fraud and fraudulent trading Danny Shea, 48, a builder, of Royal Drive, Bordon, Hampshire, appeared at Winchester Crown Court today. He was jailed for five and a half years. Shea initially pleaded not guilty to all the charges, which were authorised by the Wessex Complex Casework Unit of the Crown Prosecution Service, but he changed his pleas at hearings earlier this year. The prosecution had resulted from a investigation in which SEROCU officers and financial investigators followed up allegations that house owners in North East Hampshire and Surrey had paid for renovations and rebuilding that has not been completed. The photographs show a home in Grayshott before and after Shea became involved in renovating it. The nine fraud charges related to offences at addresses in Thursley, Chiddingfold, Tadworth and Chertsey in Surrey and Farnborough, Bordon and Grayshott in Hampshire, between 2007 and 2010. More than £2.1 million was obtained in this way, and the money laundering offence related to that same total amount. He also pleaded guilty to a 10th offence of fraudulent trading, relating to theft of plant and construction machinery and motor vehicles, which had been unlawfully sold. In relation to those offences some property has been recovered by SEROCU and by companies from which it had been hired or bought in Hampshire, Sussex and Kent. Enquiries are continuing to trace further equipment valued in excess of £121,000. Detective Sergeant Ian Ball said: "For 3 years Shea systematically defrauded customers who engaged him to carry out building work. He claimed to be going to carry out work to a proper standard and finish the respective jobs. In fact he had no intention of doing either. After an original down payment he would obtain further money again with no intention of doing the work. Further requests for payment would be made but work would slow and stop. There would be re-negotiation but by then the victims were sucked in and just wanted to have the work finished so would agree to the new demands and even pay suppliers direct for materials. Shea would meanwhile make token efforts at work just to keep them on the hook. Then he would disappear leaving unfinished and sub-standard work. The cost of remedial work sometimes ran into hundreds of thousands of pounds. However, working with partners in many agencies, and with the CPS, we were able to support the victims and get the evidence that finally enabled us to bring Shea to justice." The wind was blowing hard across the top of Langstone Harbour and under the bridge to where the casualties boat was moored, and the owner having spent a couple of days on board doing jobs and getting ready for the sailing season prepared to leave the boat. With the oars for the tender and its outboard engine safely transferred he set off in the tender to go ashore. The outboard hit an obstruction and lost power and in the wind he spiralled downwind onto the ancient Wadeway. His bad luck continued as the tender flipped twice in the wind breaking his finger! He was resolute however and tried to walk to shore, but it was too deep and he lost his shoes so returned to the shingle bank of the causeway. Realising he was surrounded by deeper water and with a rising tide he had no option but to call 999 for help. The Hayling Island RNLI D-Class Lifeboat was launched in response to the call, was quickly on the scene, and found the man. They took him and his various items into the lifeboat and having wrapped him in a thermal blanket to keep warm took him to Langstone Sailing Club. Once the crew were sure he was OK he joined colleague club members who took charge of looking after him. Then the lifeboat crew went looking for his tender which had travelled some way on the wind. It was found on the Northney Shore, recovered, and taken back to the sailing club and secured! Mr Lawson said ‘I will be forever grateful to Andy Ferguson (Senior Helm) and the D-Class crew, who not only hoiked me from the Wadeway but also saved my tender.' Three men were night fishing in the early hours at Tilgate lake in Crawley when, at around 1.40am, they were approached by two men at the lake. The men had a verbal disagreement and one of the men who had been fishing went to ring the police. The other two men, who had been fishing, were then shot with an air pistol. Both received injuries one to head and arm and the other to his forehead and hand. Two men were arrested. Gintas Piscelinas, 25, unemployed of Tierney Road, London has been charged with possession of an air weapon with intent to cause fear of violence. Modestas Kubilius, 23, a builder from Walesbeech, Crawley has been charged with two counts of ABH and possession of an air weapon with intent to cause fear of violence.. They appeared at Crawley Magistrates Court on Monday and both been remanded to appear on June 5 at Lewes Crown Court. UPDATE 21 November 2014 Piscelinas and Kubilius then began to go through the victims tent and found the air pistol, which the fishermen had with them. Kubilius pointed the gun at point blank range at one of the victim's before firing, it was only because the victim put his hand up to protect himself that it didn't shoot him in the eye. Piscelinas also took the weapon and fired at the other victim. Detective constable Simon Goulding said- "This was a very violent, unprovoked and unnecessary attack on the victim, who suffered a terrible ordeal in the middle of the night. The men were very lucky their injuries were not more serious. However their lives have been completely changed by the impact this attack has had on them. They have suffered terribly from anxiety following on from what happened. I hope the sentences and the assurance the men will be deported following their time in prison will allow the men to be able to continue with their lives" Fire & Rescue - Call Ref: 1799 Time: 02:47-03:15 Location: MAYPOLE LANE, YAPTON Incident: FIRE car destroyed by fire - 2BA, 1Hr used by WSF&RS - deliberate ignition - WrL Bognor Fire & Rescue - Call Ref: 1801 Time: 05:41-07:07 Location: RESTAURANT AND BAR - EAST STREET, HORSHAM Incident: FIRE 2 storey building used as restaurant and bar - fire in ground floor kitchen - smoke issuing from ground and 1st floor - 8BA, 6HRs used by WSF&RS - PPV fan used for ventilation - WrLx3 Horsham, WrLx2 Crawley, CU Haywards Heath, WrL Billingshurst Fire & Rescue - Call Ref: 1821 Time: 18:25-19:05 Location: SHIPLEY ROAD SOUTHWATER Incident: RTC collision involving 1 car ,- 1 female adult trapped - car stabilised and woman extricated by WSF&RS using hydraulic and electrical rescue equipment - woman taken to hospital by ambulance - WrLx2 Horsham, HRT Crawley SUSSEX POLICE report - Ref: PR45452 / 2014 Time: 11pm Location: Charmendean Road, Broadwater, Worthing Incident: Man seriously hurt in fall from moving van Police are appealing for witnesses after a 26-year-old man fell from a moving Volkswagen Transporter van and suffered life-threatening injuries in Worthing. The sea was too rough for the woman to be transferred to the lifeboat and by this time, two crew from the nearby vessel had gone aboard her boat, dropped the sails and started the engine. Two lifeboat crew were then moved to the boat to assess the woman's condition and it was decided that the lifeboat would escort the boat back to the harbour. But after running for a few minutes she was complaining that the motion of her boat and the rough seas was causing her too much pain. The nearby vessel's rigid inflatable boat was then used to transfer her to the lifeboat and once back into the harbour, she was taken ashore to an awaiting ambulance which took her to hospital. The lifeboat then re-launched to the woman's boat and escorted her back into the harbour before she was put back on her mooring. full report Fire & Rescue - Call Ref: 2318 Time: 12:25-12:58 Location: A23 SOUTHBOUND HANDCROSS TO SLAUGHAM Incident: RTC collision involving 4 cars and lorry - 1 female adult assisted from car and taken to hospital by ambulance - scene made safe by WSF&RS WrL Crawley, WrL Horsham, HRT Crawley Fire & Rescue - Call Ref: 2327 Time: 14:37-14:59 Location: A272 MIDHURST Incident: RTC involving car off the road - no persons trapped - scene made safe by WSF&RS - incident left with police - WrL Midhurst Fire & Rescue - Call Ref: 2328 Time: 15:28-26:04 Location: FOREST ROAD, COLGATE Incident: RTC involving car rolled from road and into ditch - 1 female adult extricated by WSF&RS using hydraulic rescue equipment and taken to hospital by ambulance WrL Horsham, WrL Crawley, HRT Crawley SUSSEX POLICE report - Ref: PR45625 / 2014 Time: 4.15pm Location: Orchard Street, Chichester Incident: Taxi driver attacks man in Chichester Police are appealing for witnesses to a road rage row in which a taxi driver attacked a man and his car. At about 4.15pm officers were called to Orchard Street in Chichester to a report that a man had been assaulted. SUSSEX POLICE report - Ref: PR45683 / 2014 Time: 10.15pm Location: Crabtree Lane, Lancing Incident: Armed robbery at Uncle Sam's in Lancing Police are appealing for witnesses following an armed robbery at the Uncle Sam's fast food restaurant in Lancing. At about 10.15pm a man entered the restaurant in Crabtree Lane, threatened staff, and pointed a black handgun at the 18-year old female staff member, demanding that she open the safe, from which he then took a substantial amount of cash. The suspect is described as white, slim and not tall, and had an English accent. He was wearing dark clothing with something covering the bottom half of his face, and he had a hood covering his head. He was wearing gloves and carrying a black self loading type handgun with a red foresight. Police forensic officers examined the scene and CCTV is being reviewed. Detective Sergeant Colin O'Hare said "This is a very serious incident. The staff were unhurt but very shaken by the experience and to point the gun at the woman and forcing her to open the safe shows great callousness. This man needs to be caught and brought to justice as soon as possible."
