Jailed for running down and killing cyclist
A man who knocked down and killed a cyclist in Horsham has been jailed after admitting he had never had a driving licence.
Zisi Lushi [pictured] struck cyclist Michael Dixon in Kerves Lane, Horsham, after taking his brother's silver Citroen C2 despite having no licence or insurance.
65-year-old Mr Dixon, of Trundle Mead, Horsham, died at the scene.
He was cycling south in Kerves Lane shortly before 11am on 8 December when Lushi, who was heading north, lost control of the Citroen and swerved across the carriageway, hitting Mr Dixon and crashing the car into a hedge.
Lushi, from Albania, was carrying fake ID that claimed his name was Luigi Dannile. The 27-year-old had bought the ID after entering the country illegally on the back of a lorry.
At Hove Crown Court, on Friday 29 May, he pleaded guilty to causing death while driving without a licence and without insurance. He was found not guilty of causing death by dangerous driving but was convicted of causing death by careless driving.
When Lushi, of Broadwater Lane, Copsale, near Horsham, appeared at the same court this morning he was jailed for 14 months and told he would be deported to Albania afterwards.
After the sentencing Mr Dixon's family released a statement.

Zisi Lushi
They said: "There are no winners in this case and Mr Lushi will have to live with the knowledge that his actions on the morning of 8 December 2014 ultimately took away the innocent life of a much loved husband, father, grandfather and friend to so many.
As a family we would like to thank the police for all their ongoing support and assistance since the incident happened. We will now have to come to terms with our loss and the sentence given, before moving forward in the knowledge that Dad's life, achievements and exceptional spirit will live strong in our memories forever."

Driver banned after twice refusing to be tested for drugs
A 40-year-old man has been banned from the roads after he refused to allow officers to test if he had been drug-driving.
Carlo Poceschi was seen driving erratically in his Ford Fiesta on the A24 at Southwater shortly before 8pm on 12 March. Officers saw him driving slowly and serving from lane to lane so pulled him over. Poceschi struggled to walk so officers used a new DrugWipe roadside testing kit which confirmed that he had cocaine in his system.
He was arrested but refused to provide a sample that would have allowed officers to confirm whether or not he had an illegal level of drugs in his bloodstream. Poceschi was then charged with failing to provuide a specimen for analysis and was released on bail.
Less than two weeks later, Poceschi was found sat behind the wheel of a Ford Fiesta that had collided with a van at 7.50am on 25 March in Balcombe Road, Crawley. He was unable to follow basic requests at the roadside so was arrested but then refused to answer questions in custody and failed to provide a specimen for analysis.
Poceschi, of The Green, Crawley, pleaded guilty to two counts of failing to provide a specimen when he appeared at Crawley Magistrates Court today. He was banned from driving for 24 months, fined £220 and ordered to pay £100 costs and a £20 victim surcharge.

Smoking believed to be cause of Amberley fatal fire
A fire which claimed the life of a woman in Amberley is believed to have been started accidentally by smoking materials.
West Sussex FIRE & RESCUE Service was called to the detached thatched cottage on Hog Lane at 4.23pm on Friday following an automatic fire alarm call. A fire crew from Storrington arrived within 13 minutes of the 999 call followed by further crews from Chichester, Littlehampton, Arundel and Worthing. On arrival firefighters were presented with a well-developed fire on the ground floor of the cottage. A team wearing breathing apparatus entered the property to find the occupier, a woman in her 70s in the smoke-logged living room. Sadly, she was already deceased. The fire was extinguished using four hose reels and four jets.
Fire Investigation Officer Lee Spencer-Smith said afterwards- "Following a joint investigation with Sussex Police we believe the fire to have started accidentally, in this case by smoking materials. This is a very sad way for this lady's life to end and our thoughts are with her family at this time."
Smoking is still the biggest cause of death in accidental house fires in West Sussex and nationally.

SUSSEX POLICE report - Ref: PR49338 / 2015
Time: 00.25am
Location: Whitebeam Woods, Durrington
Incident: Worthing rape
Police investigating a rape on a woman on her way home in Worthing.
Officers were called shortly before 12.25am after the 25-year-old victim was attacked as she was walking on a footpath through Whitebeam Woods in Durrington. The attacker forced the woman to the ground and raped her.
The rapist would have had to leave the woods via one of a number of footpaths that emerge between the houses in the area.
Detectives are trying to find anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious in the area late on Friday or early today, including motorists who may have seen someone emerging from the woods.
Detective Chief Inspector Paul Rymarz, from Sussex and Surrey major crime team, said: "Although the ground was dry when the attack happened, the rapist is likely to have got some soil or dirt on them when the victim was forced to the ground. I am keen to speak to anyone who knows of someone who returned home in the early hours of Saturday morning and had dust or dirt on their clothes, hands or legs. The person could have an innocent explanation for why they were dirty. However it is also possible that they were involved so I would urge anyone who has suspicions to contact us urgently. We need the help of the local community to identify and trace the person involved. If you know anything at all, please contact us. Crimes like this are extremely rare in the area and we are not currently linking this to any other incidents."
Crime scene investigators have collected evidence from the scene and officers are continuing to carry out house to house inquiries in the area. Anyone with information should call 101 quoting Operation Mode or email sussex.pnn.police.uk

Lancing driver convicted of causing death by dangerous driving
A Lancing man who was driving a van which left the road and crashed into a tree, killing one of its occupants, has been jailed for six years after pleading guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop after a road traffic collision.
Michael Everson, 32, unemployed, of Gravelly Crescent, Lancing, was sentenced after appearing at Chichester Crown Court on Tuesday, 16 February. In addition to being jailed he was banned from driving for six years and must take a mandatory driving test before regaining his licence.
Everson had been at the wheel of a red Vauxhall Movano van shortly before 1am on Saturday, 13 June 2015, when it left the road in Offington Avenue in Salvington, Worthing, and struck a tree near its junction with Offington Drive.
Passenger Samuel Frost, 27, of Chiltern Crescent, Salvington, Worthing, died at the scene. Everson and three other passengers - one of whom was Mr Frost's twin brother, a 32-year-old man from Goring and a 27-year old man from East Worthing, all sustained minor injuries.
Everson fled the scene on foot but was traced and arrested.

Michael Everson
Sergeant Rob Baldwin, of the Sussex Road Policing unit, said: "Our investigation found that Michael Everson had consumed a mixture of alcohol, cocaine and cannabis in the hours prior to the collision. At the time of the collision he was also carrying four people in the front passenger seats of the van which were only designed to carry two people. His decision to drive the van that evening in such an intoxicated state, and with so many passengers, was highly irresponsible and ultimately led to the tragic death of Samuel Frost. The gravity of this case was further aggravated by the fact the Everson ran away from the scene in an attempt to evade responsibility for his actions."

RNLI Brighton Lifeboat BRIGHTON LIFEBOAT
Time: 07.05am
Incident: Lifeboat launches to person in water
The volunteer lifeboat crew of Brighton RNLI lifeboat were tasked to launch by Solent Coastguard today at 7.05am amid reports that person had entered the water just west of Brighton Pier.
Emergency services were contacted by worried bystanders who reported that a person had entered the sea and had not returned.
Brighton RNLI made best speed to Brighton Pier, where a search commenced in and around the pier. Given the conditions on scene the Helmsman made the decision to expand the search eastwards up to Brighton Marina.
With emergency services on shore as well as the sea an extensive search was carried out between Brighton Pier and Brighton Marina. The decision was then made to request a further lifeboat from a flank station and Coastguard Helicopter 104 to assist in the search.
Police officers completing a shoreline search spotted the individual close to shore and the volunteer helmsman of Brighton Lifeboat made the decision to put a crew member in the water to rescue the man. The crewman managed to locate the casualty and with the help of Newhaven Coastguard got the casualty ashore and passed him over to South East Coast Ambulance Service.
Sadly, despite efforts to resuscitate him the man died. [see below]

Billingshurst Christmas Day deaths being treated as murder-suicide
The deaths of a Billingshurst couple, Jan and Julia Tshabalala, on Christmas Day 2014 are now officially being treated as a murder-suicide enquiry by police.
Extensive forensic and toxicological tests have just been completed and show this to be the most likely outcome. The exact circumstances still remain to be decided at an inquest into the Tshabalalas' deaths.
Their bodies were found at their home in Groomsland Drive, Billingshurst, on the morning of 25 December last year. Evidence will now be presented to the West Sussex coroner for an inquest to be held.
Senior investigating officer in the case is Detective Chief Inspector Paul Rymarz, of the Sussex and Surrey major crime team.
He said: "People may be wondering why it has taken so long to determine the causes of the couple's deaths. But this has not been a straightforward case and consideration has had to be given to a number of forensic factors. We have had to await the outcome of tests that have taken time to complete. Members of the Tshabalalas' family are fully aware of this and understand the reasons."
He added: "I have been grateful to them for their dignity and patience while this investigation has proceeded."

RNLI Hayling Lifeboat HAYLING LIFEBOAT
Time: 12:13
Incident: Ladies trapped in the mud saved from the incoming tide.
Two ladies who took a short cut whilst out for a walk with friends, were trapped in the mud in Snowhill Creek and were rescued by Hayling RNLI Lifeboat in the nick of time as they were in danger from a rapidly rising incoming tide.
Coastguard contacted Hayling RNLI following a report from the W Sussex Fire Service that a person was possibly in the mud behind East Head/east Wittering and they asked the lifeboat crew to investigate. The D-Class Lifeboat was launched and made its way towards the inlet behind East Head known as Snowhill Creek. Whilst en-route the Coastguard updated the report that the location was correct but that there might be 4 people in difficulty.
On arriving at the scene the lifeboat crew found two people safe on the shoreline, but two others in the mud and not far from the deeper channel. With a fast incoming tide these casualties needed to be rescued and as the lifeboat was able to get quite close to them they were taken on board. They were two ladies, one French and one Spanish, who had been walking at the Witterings and got into the mud, and had they not been rescued when they were, they could soon have been in serious trouble. They were taken by lifeboat round to the W Wittering beach and put ashore where they were handed over to the Coastguard team to help them recover from their ordeal.
A visit to the seaside that quickly turned into a dangerous situation. They said "We thought we could take a short cut across the sand bank but it turned out to be mud. It was good that our friends could raise the alarm and that the RNLI got to us so quickly."

Incident: Gang attacks 17-year-old girl
Police are appealing for witnesses after a 17-year-old girl was punched and kicked by a gang of boys and girls in Shoreham.
The teenager, from Billingshurst, was walking in Beach Road at about 5.30pm when she was pushed to the ground from behind by a gang of teenagers and then repeatedly punched and kicked while she was on the ground. She was helped by two friends who took her to paramedics on duty at the Beach Dreams event at Shoreham Beach.
The next day the victim went to hospital where it was confirmed that she had a fractured cheekbone and bruising to her ribs, legs and arms.
Detective Sergeant Colin O'Hare said- "The attack appears to follow an incident a few minutes earlier during which the victim had argued with a group of boys and girls. This was a cowardly attack by a group of teenagers on one girl, first attacking her from behind and then ganging up to kick and punch her while she was on the ground."

RNLI Brighton Lifeboat BRIGHTON LIFEBOAT
Time: 8.38pm
Incident: Lifeboat in evening tombstone rescue
Solent Coastguard requested that the volunteer crew of RNLI Brighton Lifeboat launch immediately to rescue two young men who had jumped from Brighton Pier. They also advised that the two men thought to be intoxicated were now in difficulty unable to reach a safe point.
Arriving on scene the two casualties were quickly located with one managing to climb up on the unused Brighton Pier steps and the second clinging on the pier steps. Although conscious in the water it became clear the casualty was beginning to tire. A crew member entered the water to assist the casualty back to the Lifeboat were a medical assessment was carried out.
When carrying out the medical assessment it became clear that the casualty had landed on his chest when jumping off the pier and was in a lot of pain. Medical assistance was given to the casualty whilst the lifeboat made its way back to Brighton Marina were the casualty was transferred to South East Coast Ambulance Service and taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital for further medical assistance.
Jade Cohen one of the volunteer crew for Brighton said, "The two men jumped at low water this evening, so would have had a long way to fall and not a lot of water. Clearly their intoxicated state added to our concern for his wellbeing, we're glad this one ended well."

Selsey volunteer crew were paged at 4.01 p.m. Solent Coastguard had received a distress call from the 36-foot yacht 'Mojito' reporting rigging failure and a line under the stern jamming her propeller and tiller. The position given was 2 nm north east of Bembridge.
The Selsey Tyne class lifeboat 'Voluntary Worker' launched with a crew of seven at 4.14 p.m. and proceeded to the position given by the yacht. On the way communications were established using the Lifeboat's direction finding equipment and it was established that the vessel was not in the position given.
Selsey Lifeboat
At 4.55 p.m. she was eventually found 2 nm south west of Chichester Harbour and, as the sails were set, a tow was established between the two vessels to bring the yacht into the wind to enable the sails to be lowered. The Coxswain decided to take the yacht into Chichester Harbour and requested Hayling Lifeboat to assist in entering the harbour and berthing as the yacht had no steerage.
Hayling Lifeboat transferred two Lifeboat crew to the yacht to help the crew get the sails free. After entering the harbour the harbour patrol boat assisted by putting a crewman aboard who was a yacht rigger. The sails could not be lowered so the harbour patrol suggested putting the yacht on a visitor mooring until they could be freed - Full report

SELSEY LIFEBOAT
Time: 18:04
Incident: Vessel goes aground on Reef and Diver goes missing
The RNLI volunteer crew at Selsey were paged at 2.20 p.m. The 34-foot yacht 'Capreolus' had radioed an emergency call stating they had run aground off Selsey Bill on the Mixon reef.
The Selsey inshore Lifeboat, 'Betty and Thomas Moore', launched at 2.30 p.m. and proceeded to the vessel. The weather on scene was wind SW 3-4 sea state slight in sunshine. The vessel was laying over and so the inshore Lifeboat crew checked that the two persons aboard were OK and were happy to remain on the yacht which was on passage from Littlehampton to Southampton.
Selsey Lifeboat
At 4.20 p.m. the inshore Lifeboat Helmsman requested that the larger Selsey all-weather Lifeboat was launched as the yacht was 8 tons in weight and moving around on the rocks as the tide was rising and could be holed. At 4.38 p.m. 'Voluntary Worker' was on scene with the casualty and the inshore Lifeboat. The yacht floated free from the reef at 5.35 p.m. with a lifeboat towing it to clear water where a check for damage and water ingress could be made. At 5.41 p.m. the Lifeboat released the tow and the yacht was able to use its engines.
During the return to station at 5.46 p.m. a local dive boat conducting a drift dive with seven divers reported that he had no visual contact with the divers surface marker buoy and so the inshore Lifeboat was diverted to a position 3nm east of the station. At 5.50 p.m. the all-weather Lifeboat broke away from escorting the yacht and proceeded to the dive incident.
When both Lifeboats were on scene at 5.59 p.m. they started searching straight away and at 6.06 p.m. the divers started surfacing and six were recovered to the Mulberry Divers rhib. With still one diver missing Solent Coastguard tasked Bembridge lifeboat and the Coastguard Rescue Helicopter 104 to assist with search.
The diver was spotted on the surface at 6.15 p.m. and both Lifeboats headed towards him. The diver was recovered into the inshore Lifeboat and checked out. All the rescue craft were stood down at 6.20pm. - Full report
