Smoke alarm saves home and pets Three young people and two family pets had a lucky escape from a house fire in East Preston after the alarm was raised by a working smoke detector. Firefighters were called to the terraced house on Mill Pond Way, East Preston, at 2.28pm after an electrical fire was sparked by a dishwasher. Smoke from the dishwasher quickly spread through the kitchen door but thanks to the early warning given by the smoke alarm, the two brothers and their friend, who were upstairs when the fire started, were able to escape safely from the property and call 999. Two fire crews from Littlehampton and Worthing were immediately dispatched to the scene. On arrival firefighters discovered that two of the family's cats were still in the property so a team wearing breathing apparatus entered the smoke logged house to rescue the animals. One of the rescued cats was given oxygen therapy by firefighters before both were taken to vets. The young occupiers were uninjured. The fire was extinguished using two hose reels and a covering jet and the house was ventilated using a positive pressure ventilation fan. The kitchen was extensively damaged by fire; and the remainder of the house was damaged by smoke. Support for the occupiers was provided at the scene by Red Cross Fire and Emergency Support Service volunteers. Incident Commander Neal Temperley from Littlehampton Fire Station, said: "Once again, this incident highlights the value of having working smoke detectors in your home." At about 8.40pm on Thursday, 16 July, believed to be Donald Lock, 79, was driving south on the A24 when he struck the rear of a car that was also travelling south, just past the junction with the Black Horse pub. Mr Lock got out of his vehicle and was confronted by the driver of the other vehicle, who stabbed him repeatedly. The offender then got back into his car and drove away south on the A24. Mr Lock, from Worthing, suffered multiple stab wounds. Despite paramedics working on him at the scene, he died shortly afterwards. Officers are carrying out house-to-house inquiries in the area and looking for anyone who could have any information that could help identify exactly what happened. In addition anyone that has a vehicle with a dashboard camera who was in the area at the time is asked to come forward. Detective Superintendent Adam Hibbert, of the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team, said: "Mr Lock was the victim of a frenzied attack that he had no chance to defend himself against. We are looking for an extremely dangerous man and need the public's help to identify and arrest him urgently." Police are appealing for anyone who has any information about what happened to come forward immediately, no matter how unimportant you might think it is. It could be vital to our investigation. The attacker's vehicle is likely to have suffered minor damage to the rear. The attacker is likely to have had a substantial amount of blood on him after the murder. This could also be on his vehicle. If you have any suspicions about someone, do not challenge them but instead call 999. Julian King, 43, a company director of Withdean Road, Brighton, appeared at Brighton Magistrates' Court on July 27 charged with three offences of fraudulently using a vehicle registration mark and one of possessing an article in connection with fraud. He was found guilty of defrauding Brighton and Hove City Council by parking numerous vehicles around the city in resident permit bays, loading bays and on double yellow lines dishonestly, knowing that the plates displayed on the vehicles could not be traced back to him through Brighton and Hove City Council's parking enforcement enquiries. The court heard that he also evaded detection by concealing the tax disc in the vehicle on each occasion to prevent authorities establishing the correct owner's details. The offences involved several high value vehicles, including a Porsche, Bentley, Range Rover, Mercedes, Audi and BMWs. He was found guilty of using the vehicles to commit the offences on at least 45 occasions over a period of about five years. He was fined £3870 and costs of £2000, compensation was ordered to Brighton City Council of £2000 and there was a victim surcharge imposed of £120. A number of licence plates owned by King have been revoked by the Driver Vehicle and Licensing Agency. PC Mark Bassett said: "While the offences in this case did stretch back over a number of years, when they came to light we were able to find the evidence we needed to bring about this successful prosecution. This wasn't a case of someone trying to get away with a quick stop somewhere they shouldn't or spending a little too long shopping. This was calculated fraud, pure and simple" SUSSEX POLICE report - Ref: PR49710 / 2015 FOUND - Leslie Turner Missing Leslie Turner from Crawley was found in Essex on Monday, 27 July, at 3.45pm.
