FIRE & RESCUE - Ref: PR 7182

Incident: FIRE
More than 50 firefighters have been tackling a fire at a hotel in Chichester through the early hours of this morning.
West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service was called to Chapel Street in Chichester at 01.14 this morning after a fire was reported at the rear of the Belle Isle restaurant. Thankfully, all the hotel's guests were safely evacuated and relocated to the Travelodge in Fontwell, near Arundel.
The first fire crew arrived within 4 minutes of the 999 call and found the blaze had spread externally up the three storey building.
Additional crews were immediately requested and despatched to the scene. At its

Photo & report
height ten fire engines and the Aerial Ladder Platform from Worthing were all involved in the firefighting operation.
Assistance was also given by Hampshire Fire & Rescue Service with engines sent from Emsworth and Havant.
Teams of breathing apparatus wearers tackled the fire from both inside and outside of the building to prevent any further fire spread. The blaze was extinguished at around 4am but one crew still remains at the scene carrying out a watching brief.
Unfortunately, one firefighter sustained an injury from a falling roof tile. He was taken to hospital and x-rayed but his injuries are thought to be minor.
Fire Investigation Officers are currently at the scene working alongside the Police to establish the cause of the fire. Early indications are that it may have started in a rear storage/utility area of the restaurant. Chapel Street, which was closed during the firefighting operation, has now reopened.
Group Manager Gary Locker, who was at the scene, said afterwards: "The attending firefighters did an excellent job. This was a protracted incident and crews had to fight the fire from a number of sectors to successfully surround and extinguish it, including a service ventilation shaft with difficult access. I would also like to thank the team at the Dolphin & Anchor in Chichester who helped to look after the evacuated hotel guests until they could be taken on to their replacement hotel."

Incident: Yacht goes aground suspecting a leak
A yacht made a MAYDAY call as the skipper suspected he had a leak and was taking on water, so he ran the yacht aground. After some confusion the D-Class lifeboat was launched as the DLA could see the casualty yacht aground on the Winner Bank. The Harbour Patrol Vessel and Hayling Rescue were attending but in deeper water and the lifeboat was able to get close. The lifeboat helm went aboard the yacht and checked for water coming in, and since the tide was dropping rapidly checked outside the hull. All seemed OK and it seemed likely that sea water taken into the gas locker during passage had drained into the bilges. The lifeboat crew laid out a kedge anchor for when she re-floated and it was agreed that the owner would check the bilges as she re-floated and call for assistance if needed - which it turned out there was no leak.

Paul Yardley was inside a bungalow in High Street, Findon, filling his pockets with rings and earrings when PC Matt Songhurst, who was on patrol in the area with his dog Mitch, were alerted by neighbours to suspicious noises in the area and rushed to the scene, shortly before 6pm on 4 February.
PC Songhurst spotted Yardley inside the home and raced to the back door of the home where the sight of a barking Mitch and the shouts of the officer were enough to convince the burglar to drop to the floor and give himself up.
Yardley, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to burglary when he appeared at Chichester Crown Court. The 29-year-old also admitted breaking into six homes in Medstead, Winchester, Wonston and Sutton Scotney, in Hampshire, as well as one in Warminster, Wiltshire - all between 26 January and 2 February. Yardley, who had 22 previous convictions for burglary, was jailed for four years and eight months. He had committed at least eight burglaries that Police know of in just over a week which shows just how prolific he was and how many people were falling victim to him.

RNLI Hayling Lifeboat HAYLING LIFEBOAT
Time: 14:29
Incident: Fishing trip ends dramatically
The Atlantic 85 was launched in response to a Coastguard call about a leisure fisherman on a charter boat 'Valkyrie' who had overdosed on seasickness tablets and had collapsed. The Atlantic 85 reached the vessel and two crew went on board to give first aid.
The lifeboat helm decided that as the vessel was making 10 knots into the harbour and had plenty of deck space, the casualty would have a more comfortable ride into calmer waters than on the lifeboat. The two boats initially headed for Sparkes Marina, but the Coastguard had scrambled the S&R Helicopter which then airlifted the angler to hospital. The lifeboat crew were transferred back to the Atlantic 85 and both lifeboat and ambulance were stood down and returned to their bases.

Three men have been sentenced for raping a 19-year old woman during a house party in Brighton.
Rani Mishrigi, 25, a doorman, of Hangleton Manor Close, Hove; Kurlos Ramzi, 25, unemployed, of Flint Close, Portslade; and Hany Mohamed, 26, unemployed, of Regency Square, Brighton, were sentenced at Hove Crown Court today.

rapists
Ramzi was sentenced to 7 years, Mohamed was sentenced to 9 years, and Mishrigi was sentenced to 6 years. They will also be registered sex offenders for life. They had all been found guilty after a two week trial at the same Court in March this year.
The incident happened on 26 July 2013 when the woman, now 21, was raped at the party, which took place at a flat in New England Road then occupied by Mohamed. She was a guest at the party, and when the three defendants saw that she was in a vulnerable state through drink, they each decided to take advantage of the opportunity to have sex with her, which she was clearly in no state to consent to. At the trial they all maintained that she had consented, but her testimony and supporting forensic evidence was compelling, and the jury saw through their lies.
Left to right are; Ramzi, Mohamed and Mishrigi.

Don't be conned by roadside petrol scam
Horsham police is warning motorists to remain vigilant following a recent spate of people being conned into giving money for petrol by suspects pretending to be drivers in need.
The first incident, reported to police on Wednesday 22 April, occurred on the A281 in Cowfold at approximately 2.15pm. A woman from Horsham was flagged down by a man in a lay-by who told her that his car was low on fuel, and he had no money but was trying to get to a meeting in Manchester. He asked to borrow some money in exchange for a gold-coloured ring and bracelet. The Good Samaritan gave the man £65 and he left her with his business card. The man was driving a dark-coloured BMW and is described as white, large build, with a beard and moustache, with very short hair and a round face. He was wearing a grey jacket.
There was a further, similar incident the same day at Horn Lane, Henfield, where again a man parked in a lay-by flagged down a passing motorist stating that he needed money to get back to Manchester. The local driver followed the suspect to a near-by petrol station where he paid for £50 worth of fuel on his behalf and also gave him £50 in cash. The suspect again gave a gold bracelet and ring as collateral.
At 2.30pm on Sunday 26 April, a Henfield resident was flagged down by a man who had stopped his vehicle on the Wheatsheaf Road. The man said he could not speak much English and that his bank card was not working. He said his car was nearly out of fuel and he also needed to buy food.
The victim said she only had a small amount of cash that she could lend him but he reached into the car and took her purse, removing £120. The man offered the victim a necklace and ring in exchange for the cash.
He is described as being smartly dressed in a grey suit, of Eastern European origin, in his late 30s to early 40s, medium build, with very short black hair and was a passenger in a green hatchback car. The victim followed the vehicle to a local petrol station but it did not stop.
If you have any information about these men or you have been offered jewellery in exchange for money for petrol please contact police by phoning 101, quoting serial 764 of 27/04 or email sussex.pnn.police.uk

WANTED - Simon Knights - £2,500 reward
Detectives hunting for a commuting criminal are linking him to another burglary in the south east.
Officers believe Simon Knights, 38, uses the rail network to move from town to town dressed smartly in a jacket, shirt and trousers, committing burglaries and then getting the next train home.
Detectives from five police forces - Sussex, Hampshire, Kent, Essex and the Metropolitan Police - were already looking for Knights and a £2,500 reward has been put up for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of him for at least one of the offences.
Now Surrey Police have joined the hunt after Knights was linked to a burglary in Woodruff Avenue, Guildford. Police have now recovered CCTV footage, pictured, recorded nearby of the suspect and have identified him as wanted man Simon Knights.

Simon Knights
It is thought he is stealing cash and jewellery from homes to fund his gambling addiction, selling off any jewellery and spending the cash in betting shops, casinos and on fruit machines. Thousands of pounds worth of jewellery have been stolen during the more than a dozen break-ins that Knights is suspected of being responsible for in Sussex, Hampshire, Kent, London and Essex since June.
If you have any information about where he is or where he has been, please get in touch. Anyone with information should call 101 quoting serial 840 of 16/06 or email sussex.pnn.police.uk

Simon Knights broke into eight homes in Sussex, two in Kent and one in each of Surrey, Hampshire and Essex and attempted to break into another home in Sussex in a spree that ran from June 2014 to April 2015.
In each case the 39-year-old used the rail network to move from town to town dressed smartly in a jacket, shirt and trousers, committing burglaries and then getting the next train home.
He stole thousands of pounds worth of jewellery in the burglaries that police have been able to link to him.
But there could be other crimes that he committed that officers have not yet proved were done by Knights.
He was eventually arrested in Great Yarmouth on 26 June after a series of national and local appeals and a long-running investigation involving officers from Sussex, Surrey, Kent, Hampshire, Essex and the Metropolitan Police.
Knights, who gave his address as Kirkley Cliff Road, Lowestoft, Suffolk, pleaded guilty to 13 counts of burglary and one of attempted burglary when he appeared in court. He was jailed for five years and six months when he appeared at Chichester Crown Court Monday, 20 July 2015.
