Two fire crews from Chichester were called to the bungalow on Clay lane at 8pm after cooking caught fire and spread to nearby newspapers filling her home with toxic black smoke. Fortunately, because West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service had carried out a Home Fire Safety Check at the property in July last year, the bungalow was protected by a Lifeline System with a specialist 'Firelink' smoke alarm. This meant that an operator at a 24-hr monitoring centre was automatically alerted to the fire and could place the 999 call to the Fire Service. Arriving within 7 minutes of the 999 call, firefighters wearing breathing apparatus immediately entered the property and rescued the 87 year old occupier, who was confused and suffering with smoke inhalation. She was given oxygen therapy at the scene before being taken to hospital. The crews then swiftly extinguished the fire with a hose reel stopping it spreading beyond the kitchen.
