report
MOORE COURT, GRANARY WAY, HORSHAM
SMOKE ALARM SAVES MAN IN HORSHAM FLAT FIRE
Horsham firefighters have rescued a man from a fire in his ground floor flat after a concerned neighbour heard his smoke alarm sounding and dialled 999.
The noise from the smoke alarm at flats in Moore Court, Granary Way, Horsham had alerted the neighbour who then made an emergency call to West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service. Crews found the flat smoke logged and a small fire in the kitchen after they forced an entry through the front door. A team of firefighters wearing breathing apparatus searched the flat and found the occupier in a deep sleep on a settee in the lounge and unaware of the danger he was in. They brought him out to fresh air and handed him over to colleagues who gave him oxygen. The man, believed to be in his 40s, suffered smoke inhalation and was treated at the scene by paramedics but did not go to hospital. Incident Commander Steve Blackaby said the actions of the neighbour responding to the smoke alarm sounding had helped to prevent a possible tragedy. "It just reinforces the importance of having working smoke alarms in every home. Even when you are unable to respond to it yourself or escape to safety, the alarm sounding could be heard by a good neighbour or a passer by who can then call the emergency services. "A good deed like that could save your life. But even if your home is unoccupied when a fire breaks out, the sooner someone raises the alarm the quicker we can get there to stop the fire spreading and prevent it causing even more damage."

EMERGENCY SERVICES BUSY WITH FLOODING CALLS IN LITTLEHAMPTON AREA
Firefighters are currently busy dealing with flooding caused by heavy rain in the Littlehampton area. The Command & Mobilising Centre of West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service has received over 80 flooding related calls between 22.30-03.00 The biggest impact is in the area of South Terrace on Littlehampton seafront where a number of basement flats have been flooded to a depth of up to four feet. A temporary rest centre has been set up in the Sportsdome at Littlehampton Swimming Centre for people evacuated. There are no reports of any injuries, but people are being urged to stay out of floodwater due to the dangers of lifted manhole covers and water contaminated with sewage. Agencies involved in dealing with the flooding include Environment Agency, Police and Southern Water. The Rest Centre is being run by Arun District Council with support from the Red Cross Fire & Emergency Support Service.

WEST SUSSEX FIRE CREWS RESPOND TO FLOOD CALLS ACROSS THE COUNTY
Due to heavy rainfall overnight and this morning, West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service is currently receiving a high number of flood related calls from across the county.
The Command and Mobilising Centre in Chichester has received in excess of 200 calls since midnight, with coastal areas of the county being particularly affected. Thankfully, there have been no reported injuries. With more rain predicted during the day the Fire Service is urging members of the public to call 999 only if there is a risk to life or risk of serious property of environmental damage.
Flooding and adverse weather advice from West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service:
  • Do not travel in heavy rainstorms unless absolutely necessary.
  • Do not attempt to drive through flooded roads. The water may be deeper than it looks and may be moving quite fast. Your vehicle could become stranded or swept away.
  • Do not attempt to walk through flooded areas - even shallow water can be fast moving and sweep you off your feet. There may also be hidden dangers such as open drains, damaged road services, submerged debris or deep channels; these can cause serious injury.
  • Do keep an eye on weather reports on local television or radio news channels.
If your home is being affected by flood water we recommend the following:
  • If your home begins to flood, turn off your electricity supply.
  • If flood water threatens your home, move valuables and any furniture you can upstairs.
  • If you have an elderly or vulnerable family member or neighbour who is at risk of flooding, contact them to ensure they are prepared and know what to do should their home flood.
  • Try and keep warm and dry. A flood can last longer than you think and it can get cold. Take some warm clothes and blankets upstairs to a safe place.
  • Always call 999 if there is an imminent risk to a person's life.
For up to date Flood Watch information and further advice, log on to the Environment Agency website or ring Floodline on 0845 988 1188.

Residents being supported in flooded area of Elmer village, West Sussex

Police, fire service colleagues and council officers are working together to evacuate people where necessary from flooded homes in the village of Elmer, West Sussex. Residents have reported flooding of up to six feet in some homes.
Sussex Police Specialist Search Unit and district officers along with West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service colleagues are wading and using inflatable crafts where necessary to reach some 250 vulnerable homes, knocking on doors and searching homes to make sure people are safe and receive the help they need. Residents are being taken to Arun Leisure Centre in Felpham. People are being looked after and offered the support of designated housing officers to help secure alternative accommodation and liaise with insurance companies.
Chief Superintendent Paul Morrison said: "I can assure residents that working with partner agencies we are doing all we can to care for those affected by the floods. We are constantly reviewing the situation with partners and have created a multi agency Adverse Weather Office to co-ordinate our response."
Nigel Croad, Deputy Chief Executive of Arun District Council, said: "As a district council our role is to support the emergency services in their response to this incident and, working with others our priority is always to help people who have been evacuated from their homes, ensuring they have somewhere safe and dry to stay and helping with housing advice. Three rest centres have been set up across the district in the last 24 hours in response to the exceptional weather conditions. We've kept people dry, safe and warm and helped those affected contact their insurance companies, find alternative accommodation and, in some cases, have housed people ourselves in temporary bed and breakfast accommodation. Our rest centre at Arun Leisure Centre remains open and ready to accommodate more people should conditions worsen."

update
The Met Office has advised that much of the rain has cleared across Sussex, but that a further band of rain will be coming across later this evening with an average rainfall of 15-20mm across West Sussex, with some areas seeing up to 20mm overnight.
Access to Bognor remains problematic as all three main routes are blocked A29, A259 and Elmer Road. The focus of efforts is on the A259 where extra drain jetters are being provided to clear the road here.
The Arun leisure centre at Felpham will stay open till 10pm but will remain available overnight should it be required. At Limmer Lane, Felpham, a quarter mile of residential properties are under five to six feet of water.
Worthing hospital has advised that flood waters are backing up again, however arrangements are in place to protect the lift shafts which should ensure that patients will not need to be redirected to other hospitals. The hospital is working closely with Southern Water on managing the problem and continue to monitor the issue.
