Detectives are investigating a hate crime incident which has taken place at the Arundel Park Hotel.
Police were called at 5.40pm by a member of the public reporting that the entrance to the hotel, in The Causeway, Arundel, was on fire. Shortly afterwards, a hotel guest discovered a blanket that had racist language written on it.
West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service also attended the scene and initial investigations revealed that an accelerant had been used to start the blaze. The incident is being investigated as racially aggravated arson with intent. A police spokesperson said they were linking the arson with the discovery in the car park of the blanket, and this is being treated as a hate crime because of the racist language that was used. Fortunately no-one was injured as a result of the arson but this could have been far more serious if it hadn't been spotted quickly and extinguished.
Anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area at the time is asked to contact Police on 101, quoting serial 1349 of 14 July. Alternatively, call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111."

Top tips
If you're using a disposable BBQ check that the ashes are completely cold before moving it. To avoid starting a fire you should allow it to cool for several hours and then consider pouring water over it to make sure it's out. No barbecue should be left unattended due to the risk of fire or injury
