Fortunately, because West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service had carried out a Home Fire Safety Check at the property in October last year, the bungalow was protected by a Careline System with a specialist 'Firelink' smoke alarm. This meant that an operator at a 24-hr monitoring centre was automatically alerted to the fire and could place the 999 call to the Fire Service.
To find out if you, or a relative or neighbour, may be eligible for a Home Fire Safety Check call 0800 3286487 or visit www.westsussex.gov.uk/fire

F&RS report
Passing youths alert residents to Fire
At 01.55am today 8th August , West Sussex Fire Service Command and Mobilising centre received a 999 call to a report of a flat fire in Worthing. Two fire crews from Worthing Fire station were called to the building in Romany Rd. En route, it was believed that residents were trapped, so an additional appliance was mobilised from Worthing. Crews arrived within 4 minutes and found several people in the road, waving the crews down and told them of a fire on the first floor.
Two firefighters wearing Breathing apparatus entered the flat and one male adult was led to safety. Meanwhile 9 other residents were evacuated as a precaution. Two people suffered smoke inhalation and were given oxygen at the scene before being taken to hospital for a precautionary check up. The fire was started accidentally and luckily damage was restricted to the living room only.
The initial call was raised by some youths who were walking past the building and saw the flickering of the flames in the window and smoke coming from the first floor. Whilst one of them dialled 999, the others ran to the flats and started to alert the residents to the danger. This led to the building being evacuated very quickly.
Watch Commander Darren Wickings said "The actions of the passing youths were very commendable. They immediately dialled 999 and started to inform our Control and Mobilising centre about the fire, whilst two others ran to the door and started banging on it. They also shouted up to the second floor and alerted residents to the situation. Their prompt action certainly made our job easier, as the evacuation was well under way when we arrived. Two people suffered smoke inhalation, but the outcome could have been much worse, had the residents not had an early warning."

Incident: Woman dies in Pulborough collision - witnesses sought
Emergency services were called to Lower Street, Pulborough, at the junction with the A29, just before 7.30am today, after a heavy goods vehicle and a local woman pedestrian had been in collision. Paramedics attended to the woman but sadly she died at the scene a short while later.

Ref: PR40160/2012
Time: 4.12am
Location: southbound M23
Incident: Serious crash on M23 at Gatwick - witnesses sought
Emergency services were called to a serious collision on the southbound M23 which happened at 4.12am, just south of the Gatwick junction. The collision involved a silver Mercedes C220 saloon car which was believed to have been stationary on the motorway, a green Honda Accord saloon and a silver Renault Megane. Four occupants of the vehicles were injured and one of them, a 40-year old Slough man who was the sole occupant of the Renault, is in a critical condition with internal injuries. A man and a woman in the Honda, both from Crawley, were both injured, one seriously and one slightly, and both have since been discharged from hospital. A 22-year old man from Shepperton in Surrey, who had been in the Mercedes was arrested at the scene on suspicion of dangerous driving and being unfit to drive through drink or drugs. Having been released from hospital he is currently being questioned by police.
All four were taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.
The northbound carriageway remained open throughout the incident. However the southbound M23 was completely closed between Gatwick and Crawley until 10.00am, when it was then possible to open the hard shoulder to southbound traffic. The full southbound carriageway was opened at 12.30pm.
Anyone who saw what happened is asked to contact Sussex Police via 101 quoting Operation Oyster.
