Time: 22:17-00:36 Location: TERRACED HOUSE - LUTYENS CLOSE, CRAWLEY Incident: Fire - ground floor and porch of house severely damaged by fire and heat - remainder of house severely damaged by smoke - mother and son left the house safely due to the smoke alarm activating, giving a vital warning - 6BA, 3HRs by F&RS - both neighbouring houses slightly affected by smoke and ventilated by F&RS using 2 PPV fans - fire under investigation but is believed to have started accidentally in the electrical intake within the porch - WrLx3 Crawley, WrL Horsham, BASU Horsham, FIO, Red Cross Support Unit SMOKE ALARM SAVES CRAWLEY MOTHER AND SON A mother and son had a lucky escape after their smoke alarm alerted them to a fire in their home in Crawley tonight. West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service was called to the terraced house in Lutyens Close in Bewbush at 10.19pm after the woman heard her smoke alarm activating, spotted smoke and flames through the glass in her front door, and dialled 999. Thankfully, the woman and her teenage son were able to escape safely through their back door and wait for fire crews to arrive. Fire engines from Crawley were on the scene just 5 minutes later and firefighters wearing breathing apparatus immediately began tackling the fire with hose reels and a covering jet. An additional crew from Horsham was also called into action to fight the blaze, which started in the porch area and had spread through the front door into the ground floor of the property. Quick work by the firefighters managed to successfully stop the fire spreading to the rest of the property or to neighbouring homes. Incident Commander, Pete Bristow from Crawley Fire Station, said afterwards- "Once again this incident highlights the value of having working smoke alarms in your home. This was quite an intense fire that destroyed the front door and spread inside the property and could have endangered their lives. Thankfully, because their smoke alarm activated they got that vital early warning and had enough time to make a safe escape from the house. We can't repeat the message enough - make sure you protect your home and family by installing smoke alarms and testing them each week. It really does make all the difference." The driver, a man believed to be in his 40s was airlifted to Kings College Hospital in South London with serious chest injuries. The passenger is not believed to have been hurt. The road was closed until about 4.40pm while the man was transferred to the helicopter, and the lamppost damage made good, and the road cleared by the highway authority. FIRE & RESCUE - Call Ref: 2871 Time:00:01- 01:00 Location: HIGH BEECHES LANE, HANDCROSS Incident: RTC - car in collision with tree - 1 adult male and 1 adult female trapped - paramedics in attendance - both persons extricated by F&RS using hydraulic rescue equipment and taken to hospital by ambulance - incident left with police - WrLx2 Crawley, HRT Crawley Police report Car collides with tree to avoid deer in Haywards Heath police reference:PR39297/2012 A 19-year-old man and his female passenger, also 19, and both from Crawley, have been taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital with serious but non life threatening injuries after their red Peugeot collided with a tree just before midnight last night. Police and emergency services, including West Sussex Fire and Rescue attended High Beeches Lane, Handcross at around 11:45pm. Sergeant Pete Verney from West Sussex Road Policing Unit said: "This is a very unfortunate incident which could have resulted in life threatening consequences and we wish both casualties a full and speedy recovery. The Peugeot was travelling south west along the B2110 when it is thought a deer ran out causing the driver to swerve and hit a tree. We are appealing for anyone who may have seen the red Peugeot prior to the collision to please get in touch with us. Please call 101 quoting serial 2005 of 30/05." The road was closed for over 2 hours whilst the injured people were freed from the car and taken to hospital and their car recovered.
