Major fire on Bognor seafront

Crews from West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service, supported by colleagues from Hampshire, are dealing with a major fire on Bognor seafront.
They were called to a smell of smoke at 3.47am. The first crew was on site by 3.55am.
They have had 14 appliances dealing with the fire on The Esplanade, close to Lennox Street. Crews have been working in extremely difficult conditions. Although part of the building was derelict 30 people have been evacuated from adjoining flats. The Fire Service is working in partnership with a number of agencies, including Arun District Council, and have support from Hampshire Fire & Rescue Service, West Sussex County Council's Resilience and Emergencies Team and their own Technical Rescue Unit.
Lead officer at the scene Adrian Murphy said: "This incident has taken place in the midst of a major storm and it was difficult to stand when we arrived on the seafront. Our crews have worked hard for the last few hours with support from a number of other agencies. Our key priority now is to work with the displaced residents to get them safely home as soon as possible."

Large fire on Lancing Industrial Estate

Firefighters remain at the scene of a large fire that broke out at a waste recycling centre in Lancing overnight. The fire is under control and there are no reported injuries.
The first of more than twenty 999 calls to the Rabbit Waste Management building in Chartwell Rd was received at 1:15am with fire crews from Lancing and Shoreham initially mobilised.
The fire was in a large building measuring 85m x 35m and containing more than 500 tonnes of wood chippings used for recycling.
The fire was attacked using ground monitors and jets with firefighters working hard to prevent the fire spreading to the rest of the building and plant room. At its height the incident involved 10 fire engines, an Aerial Ladder Platform, two Bulk Water Carriers, and a High Volume Pump unit with West Sussex crews supported by colleagues from East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service. The smoke from the fire is not believed to be toxic.
The incident has now been scaled down but is expected to be protracted with fire crews at the scene for most of the day.

Rowfant Business Centre fire

West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service remains at the scene of a fire that burned overnight in a business park at Rowfant, near Crawley Down. The service received the first of over ten emergency calls to this incident at 01:15 this morning [26 June]. At its height, 12 fire engines were in attendance with firefighters and officers working hard throughout the night to control the blaze.

The complex incident involved tankers of diesel and heating oil. Crews from WSFRS were supported by colleagues from East Sussex, Surrey and Gatwick Fire & Rescue Services to bring the fire under control and minimise the spread of the blaze. Crews were supported by specialist appliances including Water Carriers, the Aerial Ladder Platform, and WSFRS's Incident Command Unit.

The fire, although causing a large plume of smoke, was located in an unpopulated area and there was no evacuation of residential properties.

Adrian Murphy, Incident Commander, added; "Our crews are still on scene this morning and we continue to work closely with the Environment Agency and other partners to protect the surrounding water course. Our priority now is to make this scene safe. I would like to thank all of our crews, and our colleagues from across our borders, for their hard work throughout the night to contain what was a very complicated incident. At this stage it remains too early to speculate on the cause of the fire, an investigation is ongoing."

A neighbouring property sustained roof damage and was also evacuated. Firefighters, Crawley Borough Council tree surgeons, plus structural engineers, are currently at the scene. A working smoke alarm is the only thing in your home that can alert you and your family to a fire 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Whether you're awake or asleep, a working smoke alarm is constantly on alert, scanning the air for fire and smoke and will give you that early warning that could make the difference.
