FIRE & RESCUE report
An elderly lady was rescued by Shoreham firefighters this evening after a fire broke out in the kitchen of her Southwick home.
West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service was called to the end of terrace house on Summersdeane at 5.51pm after items left on a cooker are believed to have caught light. Fortunately the occupier, an 80-year old lady with limited mobility, was protected by a Lifeline System with a specialist 'Firelink' smoke alarm. This meant as soon as her smoke detector activated an operator at a 24-hr monitoring centre was automatically alerted to the fire and could place the 999 call to the Fire Service.
On arrival, firefighters from Shoreham entered the smoke-logged house and immediately lifted the owner out to fresh air where she was given oxygen therapy. She was subsequently taken to hospital by ambulance. The crew quickly extinguished the fire, which was confined to the kitchen, using breathing apparatus and hose reels.

RNLI LIFEBOAT
Time: 3.45pm
Incident: Lifeboats launched to missing swimmer
RNLI Lifeboats were launched at 3.24pm after a woman informed the Selsey Lifeboat station attendant that she was concerned for her husband who had gone for a swim and was approximately 60mins overdue.
This information was passed to the duty Coxswain who, with two others, scanned the area from the Lifeboat station using binoculars. With nothing sighted the Coxswain notified Solent Coastguard who requested both Lifeboats launch and the Rescue Helicopter R104. A local dive rhib from Mulberry Divers also joined the search with Selsey Coastguards conducting a beach search.
The man had entered the water 2-3 hundred metres west of the Lifeboat station so the search was from that position towards Bognor Regis as this was the tidal stream at the
time. It was known that the swimmer could possibly have gone to the Mixon pole some 1.25 miles south of the Lifeboat station.
The weather on scene was wind force 3 with a slight sea state in sunshine with good visibility. At 3.45pm the Coastguards requested that both the Littlehampton RNLI lifeboats join the search. At approximately 4.25pm Solent Coastguards received an emergency phone call from a member of the public reporting a swimmer approximately 100 metres off shore near to the Selsey Bill point. All the rescue craft were approaching this position in the search and the Selsey inshore Lifeboat was able to recover the man and confirm that he was the missing swimmer. The Lifeboat crew took him back to the station to be checked by an ambulance crew and reunite him with his family. All rescue craft were stood down at 4.35pm. - Full report

news release
Tenants urged to remind landlords about new smoke alarm laws
Tenants living in privately rented accommodation are being urged to remind their landlords about new life saving legislation set to come into force next month.
From October 1, subject to Parliamentary approval, all private landlords must fit smoke alarms on each floor of their rental properties and install carbon monoxide alarms in rooms containing solid fuel burners. Any landlord who does not comply could face a £5,000 fine.
This will bring private rented properties into line with existing building regulations that already require newly-built homes to have hard-wired smoke alarms installed. The new law will ensure that no rental properties are left unprotected from the risks of fire, and will also significantly improve protection against the equally dangerous carbon monoxide.
To help support local landlords in meeting the new regulations West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service has a limited number of free smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms to give out to relevant landlords whose properties currently do not have alarms.
Private landlords in West Sussex wishing to apply for a free detector should submit an online application or visit www.westsussex.gov.uk/fire for more information. All applications will be prioritised according to risk.

Tortoises stolen in Colgate burglary
Police are appealing for witnesses to a burglary at a property in Forest Road, Colgate, near Horsham, between 7.15am and 5pm, in which two valued tortoises were stolen. Laptops and jewellery were also stolen. The two Mediterranean spur thighed tortoises were a male called Lew and a female called Lyn. Lew is about 8" long and has a darker shell in part, while Lyn is about 7" long and has an overall lighter shell.
PC Ollie Pullen said: "Burglary is a callous crime that has a significant impact on the victim. This incident is even more traumatic for the victims as two much loved family pets have been stolen.

Tortoises stolen
Tortoises need specialist care; Lew and Lyn are unlikely to survive if they are not looked after properly. To legally own or sell a tortoise in the UK you have to have the correct certificate as they are an endangered species, if you do not have the relevant paperwork then you commit an offence. I would urge anyone, whether it is a member of public or pet shop/reptile centre, who has been offered a tortoise for sale in suspicious circumstances to get in contact with us. You can call Sussex Police directly or contact Crimestoppers anonymously. We need your help in reuniting Lew and Lyn with their family."
