Officers in Shoreham air crash conduct investigation leave the force
The Chief Constable of Sussex Police has received a recommendation from Assistant Chief Constable Robin Smith that two probationary police officers, investigated in relation to their inappropriate behaviour following the tragic Shoreham air crash, should be dismissed.
The Brighton-based officers, aged 23 and 24, appeared before Assistant Chief Constable Robin Smith on 30 September. He assessed the evidence and submitted a detailed report to the Chief Constable this week.
Both officers have since offered their resignations, which they have a right to do under Regulation 13, and these have been accepted.
Chief Constable Giles York said: "We, along with the public, expect the highest standards of professional behaviour. An investigation has taken place and I am reassured that Sussex Police has responded promptly and fairly. The men, who have less than two years service, are clearly remorseful and have acknowledged the impact of what they had done; but when it really mattered the officers failed to show understanding and compassion for the victims and their families. I am confident that they would not go on to become well-conducted officers. The police service has a national code of ethics that we expect officers and staff to abide by - including showing respect and courtesy."

Incident: Large scale search for missing passenger
Four lifeboats, a Type 45 Frigate, 2 helicopters, a cruise ship and a cruise ship's own rescue RIB were involved in a search for a cruise ship passenger who was thought to have gone overboard during the ship's return to Southampton following a 14-day cruise.
At 04:11 the Frank and Anne Wilkinson was launched to conduct a search for a missing passenger from the cruise ship Ventura. At the same time the rescue helicopter was tasked from Lee on Solent. Selsey's ALB was also launched to assist, however as the search area was adjusted to a position roughly 20 miles south of the Isle of Wight she was returned to station.
At approximately 07:45, Yarmouth's Severn Class ALB was launched, however as they were making there way down towards the search area a crewman became ill and required evacuation. Freshwater Independent Lifeboat was launched to carry out this evacuation, which had to be aborted due to the prevailing weather conditions. The Frank and Anne Wilkinson meanwhile carried out search patterns in the suspected area where the passenger was last seen along with the Ventura who had reversed her course and the Ventura's own rescue rib which had been launched.
HMS Diamond a Type 45 Frigate was also tasked to assist in the search, and Yarmouth's ALB having returned their crewman to Yarmouth were re-tasked and proceeded to the search area. With the Rescue helicopter having to refuel twice during the search, an additional helicopter from Portland was also tasked.
The on-scene weather conditions were described as a 2m breaking sea with a force 5 to 6 ENE wind.
The search has been stood down with sadly nothing found.

Smoking believed to be cause of fatal fire in Littlehampton
A fire which has claimed the life of an elderly woman in Littlehampton is believed to have been started by smoking materials.
West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service was called to Harwood Road in Littlehampton at 12.10pm on Saturday 10 October following a report of a fire in a terraced house.
Firefighters from Littlehampton were at the scene within 4 minutes of the alarm being raised and were confronted with a well-developed fire on the ground floor of the property. A team wearing breathing apparatus entered the house and discovered the woman, who was in her 70s and has not yet been named, in the living room. Sadly, the woman was declared dead at the scene. Possible building scam in Haywards Heath
Police are warning people in mid-Sussex to beware of being tricked into buying expensive building supplies by cold callers.
It follows an incident at Jewson's warehouse on the Bridge Road industrial estate in Haywards Heath shortly before 12.30pm today
Staff became suspicious after an elderly man accompanied by a man in his 20s came in and bought more than £1,000 worth of goods on the older man's card. They left together in a black Ford Focus car but the younger man later returned to the store in a white tipper truck to collect the materials. Because the purchaser had appeared confused police were called, and on seeing officers arrive the man made off on foot. FIRE & RESCUE report - Call Ref: 8577
Time: 3.12pm - 3.51pm
Location: Benbow Pond off A272 Easebourne, Midhurst
Incident: RESCUE
Fire crews and police rescued two people from a car that had overturned in a pond and was sinking in soft mud.
A fire engine and 4x4 from Midhurst were alerted to the incident at 3.12pm yesterday at Benbow Pond off A272 Easebourne, near Midhurst. They quickly arrived at the scene and worked with police to free an elderly man and woman from the upside down vehicle. Crews from Storrington and Haslemere were also sent to the incident but not required
Deputy Chief Fire Officer Lee Neale said: "Our response to this incident highlights the positive aspects of the new ways of working we brought in earlier this year. In April we set up a Crewing Optimisation Group, or COG for short, a team of firefighters deployed to different stations on a daily basis to support the resilience of our retained crews and to carry out community safety work. In their first three months of operation team members helped make available additional on-call appliances on 335 occasions and they played a critical role in this pond rescue. A supervisory officer from the team had been sent to Midhurst for the day to work with the local crews. That meant a fire engine from Midhurst was quickly crewed and sent to the scene. Additional firefighters were able to travel to the incident on the station's 4x4, this was another change in our deployment strategy brought about in April. Both of these teams were quickly at the scene but when the emergency call was first received our control centre also requested additional appliances. One of these, from Storrington, was, again, able to quickly mobilise thanks to a COG team member located at Storrington for the day to boost available resources in that area."

Incident: Lifeboat Launched to Locate Kayak
Solent Coastguard requested the launch of the Selsey lifeboat after a member of the public had expressed concern for a kayak approximately half a mile offshore from Park Copse, Selsey.
The Selsey Coastguard team were sent to Park Copse but, with fading light, were unable to see the kayak. They fired a white parachute flare to illuminate the area and, after spotting an object and small light they couldn't identify, requested the lifeboat to check the area.
The lifeboat found the kayak, and the Coastguard team on the beach confirmed that the lifeboat was in the position of the object and light which, in fact, was a head torch the kayaker was wearing. The kayaker confirmed that he was fishing and would be for the next hour. He was well equipped with safety equipment.

Business fraud warning after Eastbourne firm loses £18,000
Police are warning businesses about a current type of fraud which might affect them.
Last month a firm of accountants in Sussex received an email purporting to be from a senior manager at the firm, asking for £18,900 to be transferred into a specific bank account. This was done and only later did it turn out that the request was not authorised and that both the email address and the account had been set up for the fraud, and the money had been taken from the account in cash from a bank in the north of England.
Financial Fraud Action UK advise that the fraudsters use special software to make the message appear genuine.
This type of scam has been dubbed 'whaling' fraud, as it targets the so-called big fish of business.
The emails request that urgent payments are made outside normal procedures, often for a pressing reason, such as the need to secure a contract. When the money is transferred, it goes into an account set up by the fraudsters.
There have been no other reported examples in Sussex so far but police are warning firms to be on the alert.
Scam letters, emails, telephone calls and faxes of different types are sent out in their thousands daily to individuals and companies worldwide.
If you have been a victim of fraud, please report it online or by phone to Action Fraud.
Action Fraud is the UK's national fraud reporting centre and the place for you to report fraud and scams, or to get advice if you're not sure what to do. Contact them online https://www.actionfraud.police.uk/report_fraud or phone 0300 123 2040.

Police are growing increasingly concerned for a missing teenager who has now been missing for more than 36 hours.

The last sighting of Kit was around 5pm walking along Hurstwood Lane, Haywards Heath.
Kit is described as white with straight, collar-length brown hair with a long fringe over the face, around 5' 2" and was last seen wearing a large blue puffa style jacket, faded blue jeans, black top, black shoes and possibly carrying a rucksack.

We believe Kit may have hidden away in woodland, an outhouse or garden shed. Kit might have taken a rucksack with a change of clothes so might be wearing green khaki trousers. Beware of tricksters - ringing the changes
Police are warning local retailers to be on their guard following two reported fraud incidents in Uckfield.
The incidents involved a type of fraud often called 'ringing the changes', where someone asks for a sum of money to be changed into notes of a smaller denomination.
While the cashier or shop assistant is doing this, the trickster deliberately confuses them in order to obtain more money than they handed over in the first place.
Just before 1pm on Saturday 31 October two men entered the Post Office in Lewes Road, Uckfield, but the assistant realised what was happening and they left empty-handed.
One of the men is described as white, with an eastern European accent, in his mid to late 20s, of stocky build and wearing a hat and a grey/blue fleece. The second man was similar in terms of age and accent, but he had a tanned appearance and was wearing a blue bandana and a grey/blue fleece.
The second incident happened later the same day at a business off the High Street, Uckfield. At around 10.30pm two women managed to obtain more than £100. One of the women was described as 20-30 years-old, of Eastern European appearance, with brown hair and a slim build, wearing a white top and jeans. Her companion was a 35 to 40-year-old woman, with brown hair, wearing tracksuit bottoms and a hooded top.
Sergeant Kara Tombling said: "I would like to advise businesses and retailers to be very cautious if they are asked to exchange notes for lower denominations, and if they are in any doubt, to refuse the request. As the festive season approaches, shops and businesses will be getting busier, so extra vigilance is needed and counter staff need to be made aware of this scam, which can prove to be very costly."
