Car travelling in the wrong direction on A23
Location - A23 at Handcross Hill, Mid Sussex
Time - 09 March 2011 10.53
Police ref - 34731

Police are appealing for information following an incident on the northbound carriageway of the A23 at Handcross Hill on Tuesday, 8 March.

At around 8.30pm a small hatchback vehicle, possibly a Toyota Yaris, was seen travelling the wrong way along the carriageway narrowly missing several cars before exiting at Warninglid.

A 17-year-old girl in a red VW Polo travelling northbound, was forced off the road to avoid a collision and as a result her car overturned. The driver of the car travelling in the wrong direction failed to stop at the scene.

PC Neil Cox from North Downs Road Policing Unit said: "This could have been catastrophic. We are hoping that other drivers who had to swerve to avoid the car will contact us. The teenager driving the Polo escaped with minor injuries but obviously she is very shaken from the experience."

The teenager from Crawley was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital for treatment.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Sussex Police on 0845 60 70 999 quoting serial 1512
