Police ref - 34722
A cash box has been stolen from a security guard collecting money from Sainsbury's in Downland Business Park, Worthing, at around midday today [8 March].
Two men approached the driver of a security van, threatened him and demanded money. After stealing the cash box they got into a blue Ford Mondeo, which was followed by a black Subaru Impreza.
Both cars went out of the Sainsbury's entrance, through the traffic lights on the A27, straight over into Morland Avenue and into Leighton Avenue where the Mondeo was abandoned and set on fire at the corner of Northbrook Road. The suspects got into the Subaru after it pulled in just ahead of the Mondeo.
Two men were seen in Ivy Arch Road near Worthing town centre. They then entered the subway going under the bridge where they attempted to break into the cash box with an axe. They abandoned the cash box and ran along the alley coming out into Bridge Road at around 12.20pm.
Detective Inspector Trevor Bates said- "This was a violent attack on a security guard and we are offering him our continued support. This is being treated as an isolated incident and an investigation is underway to quickly identify these individuals. The black Subaru Impreza was stolen in Lingfield within the past two weeks and has been using stolen number plates, registration BP03 CUG. The blue Ford Mondeo, registration S22 OMH, was stolen in Brighton on February 12. If you have any information regarding either of these cars, contact police immediately.
The security van driver received severe bruising and was taken to Worthing Hospital for treatment. Another security guard attempted to intervene. He was shaken but uninjured.
The suspects are described as white, 5'10-6' and stocky. One was wearing a black baseball cap and black shell-suit type jacket, the other was wearing a black woolly hat. No weapon was seen or mentioned during the robbery.
