Police report
A 72-year-old woman was airlifted to the Royal Sussex County Hospital following a five vehicle road traffic collision.
Police and emergency services were called to the A283 at its junction with Plaistow Road at Fisherstreet at around 5.45pm. It is believed a Peugeot car which was travelling north crossed into the opposing carriageway to avoid a black VW which was waiting to turn at the junction and consequently collided with three southbound vehicles.
The driver of the Peugeot, a 72-year-old man from Middlesex, was taken to Guilford Hospital with a fractured leg. His 72-year-old female passenger, also from Middlesex, remains in a critical condition in the Royal Sussex County Hospital.
A 51-year-old woman from Petworth who was driving a blue Vauxhall received minor injuries and was treated at the scene as was her 45-year-old male passenger from Horsham.
The driver of a black VW, a 33-year-old man from London and his passenger, a 40-year-old woman, also from London, were both taken taken to Guilford Hospital. The driver suffered minor injuries but his passenger sustained a broken hand and groin injury.
A 52-year-old Somerset man, driving a blue BMW received minor injuries as did a 63-year-old man from West Sussex and his 74-year-old female passenger from Surrey who were in a red Ford car.
Sergeant Stewart Goodwin from Chichester Road Policing Unit said- 'This was a nasty road traffic collision resulting in several casualties, one of whom is an elderly lady who was airlifted to hospital suffering from serious chest injuries. She remains in a critical condition. Emergency services along with our road policing officers worked long into the evening to help the casualties and clear the road. I would like to thank drivers for their patience as some local roads were closed for several hours to enable a full investigation of the scene.'
Police would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the collision to please call on 0845 60 70 999 quoting Operation Springfield.

Police News
Police and emergency services are currently dealing with this serious RTC on the A23 Pyecombe, involving two vans which occured at around 5.55am this morning
The exact details of the incident are still being investigated but it is thought that a van which was travelling south bound, lost control crashing into the central reservation and collided with a lamppost, which in turn, fell onto another van travelling north bound. The driver of this van has suffered life threatening injuries. The other driver is believed to have suffered minor injuries. The A23 north bound remains closed but some traffic is being allowed through southbound. Drivers are advised to take alternative routes where possible.

report
ELDERLY LADY RESCUED FROM FLAT FIRE IN HAYWARDS HEATH
An elderly lady has been rescued by firefighters this morning after a blaze broke out in her ground floor flat in Haywards Heath.
West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service were called to the block of flats on Barnard Gate at 6.18 this morning after a neighbour in the flat above was woken by a loud bang, smelled smoke and raised the alarm through her Careline system. A fire crew from Haywards Heath were in attendance just 8 minutes later followed by a second crew from Haywards Heath and a further fire engine from Burgess Hill.
The first firefighters on the scene forced entry into the smoke-logged flat wearing breathing apparatus and discovered the lady unconscious on the settee. She was immediately carried out to fresh air and given oxygen therapy by the crew where she soon regained consciousness. The lady, in her eighties, received further treatment for smoke inhalation from South East Coast Ambulance paramedics and was subsequently taken to hospital. The fire, which was contained to the kitchen area, was extinguished quickly by crews using a hose reel and the whole flat was ventilated using a positive pressure fan. The cause of the blaze is still currently under investigation but early indications suggest that it started accidentally in the kitchen area.
