Emergency services were called to the incident at about 8.25am after a Volkswagen Golf, driven by a 35-year-old man from Brighton, was in collision with the police BMW 530. The road was closed in both directions after the accident this morning.

Due to initial fears of a back injury, the officer, based at the Central Road Policing Unit at Haywards Heath, had to be cut free from the car and placed on a back board.

He was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton where it was assessed that he had suffered only minor injuries and he was expected to be released soon afterwards.

Sussex Police said that although the officer was experiencing pain from the collision, he continued to coordinate the emergency response to the crash from his seat.
