The church dates back to the 14th century and was a chapelry of the larger parish of Petworth to the south. It became a separate parish in 1692. In 1832 a tower with small bell-openings, an octagonal spire and battlements replaced the existing belfry. This and other substantial works cost £661 9s 0d, Lord Egremont, the patron, paid £300 towards this. The architect A Salvin, used local Blackdown stone in 1876-77 to re-face the church and amongst other works built new south windows in a 14th century style and provided new roofs, south porch and a new west window. The font, of Sussex marble, is a shallow square bowl on a stem dating from 1662.

Keltek Trust
The old ring of three bells has been replaced by a newly cast ring of six with a tenor weight of just over 3cwt. The Trust found new homes for the old bells. The lightest bell is in private ownership; the middle bell has been installed in a church at Union Grove, Stockwell and the old tenor bell has been installed in a church in Romania.
