Police Press Release
Sunday 9 June 2013
ref- PR42569 /2013

Police are investigating after a pigeon was shot with an arrow in Lewes. A wildlife volunteer from Seahaven Bird Rescue was called at about 5pm on Sunday 9 June after a member of the public found the bird behind Tesco by Malling Field. Tragically the bird had been shot through the chest by a 2ft arrow and although it was taken to a vet it could not be saved.
Now the animal rights campaign group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals [PETA] is offering a reward of up to £1,000 for information leading to the conviction of those responsible for killing the bird.
PC Pete Hall, wildlife liaison officer, said: "The bird was found in a park usually very busy with families and which is used as a main route into town. I would have expected calls from the public if they had seen the bird or someone armed with a bow and arrow. It could be that the bird had managed to fly some way from where it had been shot. "What is certain is that seeing this bird suffering was distressing and that this was a particularly cruel act. Not only that but whoever shot the bird could have could have put the safety of others at risk."
Anyone who has any information call police on 101 quoting serial 1099 of 9/6
Or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
