Police officer injured in road traffic collision in Chichester
Location - B2145, Hunston Road, Chichester, West Sussex
Date Added - Wednesday 29 February 2012 - 7.15pm
Police ref - PR38531-2012

A Sussex Police road policing officer was taken to hospital in Chichester on Wednesday (29 February) with serious but non life threatening injuries after he was in collision with a car on the B2145, Hunston Road, Chichester at around 7.15pm.

The officer was carrying out routine stop checks and while talking to the driver of a red Ford Escort van that he had pulled over onto the grass verge, he was struck by a Ford Fiesta Zetec travelling in the same direction, driven by a 30-year-old man.

The Fiesta Zetec was then involved in a further collision with a Ford Fiesta Titanium travelling in the opposite direction, driven by a 23-year-old woman. Both drivers were mechanically trapped for a short period and were taken by ambulance to St Richards Hospital with minor injuries and have since been discharged.

Chief Inspector Natalie Moloney, head of Road Policing Unit said- "My officer was carrying out a routine patrol when this incident happened. He has suffered a hairline fracture to his pelvis, and remains in hospital in a comfortable condition. His family are aware and Inspector Phil Nicholas from Chichester Road Policing Unit is investigating the circumstances around the collision. I don't underestimate how much of a shock this would have been for all those involved and I would appeal to anyone who witnessed it to please call 101 quoting Op Leicester." The road was closed for several hours and police would like to thank drivers for their patience.
