FIRES FOLLOWING LIGHTNING STRIKES

Firefighters have been tackling a house fire in Maidenbower following a powerful lightning strike.

More than a dozen 999 calls were received just after 2.30pm this afternoon when smoke was seen pouring from the roof of the large detached house in Lyric Close.

Two fire crews from Crawley were quickly on scene and immediately placed a call for additional engines from Turners Hill and Haywards Heath to help battle the blaze. Firefighters worked quickly to contain the fire using three covering jets, two hose reels and compressed air foam.

The fire is now out but the roof has suffered severe damage and partially collapsed. Fire crews are still on scene damping down and carrying out a salvage operation.

There are no reports of any injuries - the house was unoccupied at the time of the lightning strike - and the Red Cross Fire Emergency Support Service are on scene offering welfare and support to the owners.

West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service's Command and Mobilising Centre have also received 999 calls to a number of other incidents across the county as a result of lightning strikes including Bracklesham, Chichester, Burgess Hill, Three Bridges and Forest Row.
