Flooding at the junction of Vanzell Road and Dodsley Lane

At the end of Dodsley Lane, A286. The bulk of the water has by now found its way into the river.
In the meantime the authorities react to a large amount of water sitting on the bridge and a local council crew arrive and promptly block the road with their truck.

The police arrive to take charge. This bridge is a main crossing point for the River Rother and both the A286 and A272 converge here to cross. A decision is made to close the bridge and traffic is being turned around....to go where? The people seen at right have just walked across the bridge.

Now a fire engine arrives. In the meantime, traffic in Midhurst is at a standstill with all traffic being diverted onto the Petersfield road.

Fire crew leave the appliance and inspect the bridge. Within 5 minutes the traffic is allowed through with no mishaps. By now there is gridlock throughout the area with traffic queued for over 2 miles on both the A272 and A286. Towards Chichester, on the A286, the traffic was queued back to Cocking Village.!!
