In 1893 West Sussex County Council bought Graylingwell Farm to build a new Asylum. Construction began in 1894 completed 1897.
The original farm was once home to Anna Sewell, the author of Black Beauty.
Water for the farm came from the Grayling Well.
At the outbreak of the First World War, it was used as a war Hospital and inmates relocated. From 24 March 1915 wounded came directly from the Western Front, via train from Dover. It was returned to civilian use in 1919 following a ceremony during which the last patients left to the sound of the Last Post. It then became known as Graylingwell Mental Hospital.
The last patients left in May 2001.
In 2009 the last NHS services moved out.
Following the vacation of the buildings, the site was sold, conversion work beginning in 2010 to turn the site into a community to be called Graylingwell Park.
As of December 2012 the farmhouse still remains derelict.
