Chichester Barracks

Strategically situated on a piece of high ground to the north of the city. This was the site that executions were carried out on the Gallows, one of the last were of the Hawkhurst Gang.
Nine of the smugglers and murderers were executed in January 1749 and Richard Mills, the elder and Richard Mills, the younger from Trotton, were buried at the side of the gallows on the Broyle.
Records show that the Barracks were started between 1795 and 1813. Accommodation at this time was tents. French POWs used to build wooden huts in 1803.
Mid 1930s - extensive rebuild took place, with many of the wooden huts being removed. 14 Married Quarters were built in north of the Barracks and named Otway Road. The HQ building and gym were also built at the same time, last building to be completed in 1939 was the Sandhurst block.
1958 - Renamed
Roussillon Barracks.
1960-64 - extensive build to accommodate Royal Military Police.
2005 - RMP moved out, barracks has become a housing development.

This is the first age that's ever paid much attention to the future,
which is a little ironic since we may not have one..
