Petworth Prison

The notorious Petworth Jail was opened in 1788, built to deliver solitary confinement and hard labour for mostly petty crimes. Vagrancy being the most common crime of the inmates. Employed in Petworth 'gaol', as a method of punishment, was the 'treadwheel', responsible for many deaths.
