St. Nicholas Church
Brighton

The oldest building in Brighton and probable that Bristelmestune church recorded in 1086 stood on the same site - the present church dates from the mid 14thc. The tower built at that time used some stones of Norman origin, possibly from the original church. There is also a font in the church carved around 1170 from Caen Stone.

Only the church survived the French attack in June 1514 when raiders burned the complete village, known then as
Brighthelmstone.

St Nicholas' was badly damaged by the severe storms of 1703 & 1705 losing its heavy lead roof.

Only after the last tree has been cut down,
only after the last river has been poisoned,
only after the last fish has been caught,
only then will you find that money cannot be eaten.
