Southwick

Brighton & Hove suburb Called Esmerewick by Saxons, meaning East pool hamlet. The village was first recorded as Suthewicke in 1309.
In the 18th century the village pump stood on the Green, which in more recent times was the site of stocks and maypole. The tradition that King Charles II took refuge at Southwick during his escape from England, giving rise to the name of King Charles's Cottage, appears not to be fact. [source]
