Selsey Lifeboat

A lifeboat station was established at Selsey in 1861 Station history

William Arnell
 Honest Bill

In 1950 the Maud Smith Award, for the bravest act of lifesaving was awarded to Crew Member William Arnell, who dived from a lifeboat into rough seas to rescue a drowning man thrown from a capsized boat.
'Honest Bill' was one of Selsey's better known characters and very well known by visitors for his shellfish shop near the beach. He died in October 2006 in his 90's.
