In 1950 the Maud Smith Award, for the bravest act of lifesaving was awarded to William Arnell, who dived from a lifeboat into rough seas to rescue a drowning man
thrown from a capsized boat. 'Honest Bill' was one of Selsey's better known characters and well known by visitors for his shellfish shop near the beach, shown above.
He died October 2006 in his 90's
