A number of village organisations developed, thrived and declined during the twentieth century, the best example probably being the Women's Institute which served the community in many ways until the branch closed in 1993 through lack of support (see Chapter 15). Also, until the last war, the people of Heyshott were largely responsible for making their own entertainment. Apart from the various sports clubs which flourished, there were village fetes, sports days and, until the 1920s, regular Maypole Dancing.
