The man shown to the left is Harry Standing. Employed as a lengthsman for the council, he was responsible for cleaning the road from the top of Fridays Hill to Cooksbridge.
He lived at Lower Nappers farm, where he ran a herd of dairy cows. Information from Colin Lambert, with our thanks.
For obvious reasons, looking at the pub sign, the local nickname for the Spread Eagle was the 'Splattered Pigeon'.
