Arding & Hobbs

Arding & Hobbs built 1885 as the largest department store south of the Thames.
With the telephone No.'Battersea 4' and a telegram address of 'Greatness' the staff were expecting their normal bumper Christmas in 1909. The store was fully stocked and decorated, when at approx 4.20pm on 20 December a fire broke out in a window display.
The resulting blaze claimed 8 lives and destroyed the store and many other buildings.

Only after the last tree has been cut down,
only after the last river has been poisoned,
only after the last fish has been caught,
only then will you find that money cannot be eaten.
