The Red Lion Hotel At the junction of Market Street and the High Street stood Guildford's main coaching inn, The Red Lion Hotel. Before the coming of the railways this Inn was an important stop for coach travellers and the horses to rest between London and Portsmouth. Once trains began operating this route and the journey became hours instead of days, the Red Lion Hotel became run down, finally closing in 1909. From then on was shops. Its gate becoming part of Market Street. The Bulls Head Pub, on the opposite corner, continued on for a further 80 years, closing in 1988. |
