The well at the rear of 407 Station Road, Petworth, Sussex
c.1950s - ref 771

This photo, taken at the rear of 407 Station road, was of Spot the dog on the old well which was still in use around the late 1940s and later filled in and made safe. A large tank on right hand side adjacent to the Scullery door was used to collect rainwater to supplement supply of water to the recently installed bath.

There were some craters in adjacent fields caused by bombs being jettisoned after air raids on London during the second world war.
My grandfather Ronald Barnett bred pigs here and supplied manure to the local farmer Jack Mose at Coultershaw Farm. The owner of the Coultershaw Mill lived in the Cottage next door going towards the mill.
The river Rother meandered through the meadow at the bottom of the garden. The meadow regularly flooded in the winter months and was an area that the Otter Hounds used to traverse on their way upstream.
There was also a tributary from the river Rother that passed through Tumble Bay running under the main road to the rear of Petworth Station which rejoined the main Millstream after about 400 yards.
