The local policeman in the photo was my father, Fred Read. We lived in Northchapel at the Police house from approx 1950 to I think 1955. It was (is) Police policy to move the country Police officers around after about 5 years in one area. I was at Midhurst Grammar and the next move would have been to Shoreham and dad did not want to go and disrupt the schooling. He resigned and we went to live in a small cottage behind the butchers, he did various jobs including the local "man from the Pru". We then moved to Southsea so I still had to change schools!

Sections of EMails from Derek Long of Brighton, March 2012......
With reference to the group picture I feel certain that the gentleman in the middle row third from left is Bert Upperton who lived at Forge Cottage. As a child I used to spend my summer holidays with the Upperton family during the 1940's and early 1950's. I have many fond memories of Northchapel and the surrounding area.........
......My visits to Northchapel were principally during the mid 1940's to mid 1960 during summer and Christmas. I stayed at Forge Cottage with the Upperton family along with my parents. I have countless happy memories of the time spent with them and country life. I was fascinated by the interior doors of Forge Cottage which at eye level had diamond shaped spy holes covered by a sliding panel......
......I live in Brighton and it has always been a wish of mine to visit Northchapel again but unfortunately for health reasons I am unable to drive and public transport would be difficult. Maybe one day......
