Petworth, Sussex - 1940 - ref 793
Parts of Emails from Joe Wilcox, now of Emsworth, Dec.2014
top photo "You may prefer this one however, of Augustine in front of his house, 'Magnolia Cottage' in Pound Street, still there, backing onto the park, sometime in the 30's."
Extra info:
"My family moved from Wales to Petworth around 1900, living first at Snow Hill [now demolished], in the park just outside Tillington village, then in Pound Street from sometime after the 1911 census. Augustine died there on Boxing Day 1942, soon after which the family moved away. I stayed there during WW2 with my mother while my father was away fighting. The bomb on the school was probably the nearest I came to the war although I don't remember it at all. Your pictures of this were fascinating; I had only heard tell of the event until I found your website."
Bowls Club photo
"The man standing at the LH end in the pinstripe suit was my grandfather
Augustine Wilcox. He was head forester on the Petworth estate and lived
in Pound Street. I attach a photo of him holding me when aged one, i.e. in 1940. His appearance in both
pictures is so similar, and he seems to be wearing the same suit!
I hope this is useful."
