Although remnants of Roman water supplies were found in Chichester in the latter part of the nineteenth century, the city had no piped supply.
In fact it had a poor public health standard and in relation to typhoid, it had one of the worst records in the country.
Following the establishment of the Chichester Water Company in 1873 by local businessmen,
a well was sunk at Fishbourne in 1874 and proving successful a pumping station constructed.
