The original name of the 18th century Richmond Arms Hotel, 'Goodwood Hotel', building was also Waterbeach.
I have read that apparently 'it reflects that the coastline, currently some 5 miles away, was once very much closer to its doorstep'.
Eartham Pit at close-by Boxgrove is an internationally important archaeological site. The oldest human remains in Britain have been discovered on the site. The site is situated in an area that features a buried chalk cliff that overlooked a flat beach [which contained a waterhole] stretching approximately half a mile [1 km] south to the sea. see here
