Chichester Canal Basin, Chichester, Sussex, Ref- 472, Photo/text- Peter Jeffery, c.1950s
Much has changed around the canal basin since this picture was taken in the early 1950's,
but the curved railings in the foreground, and the house on the left hand side on the basin remain.

On the south side of the city centre, this was the terminus of the Chichester Canal, an arm off the Portsmouth and Arundel Canal. It was opened in 1823 and traded until 1906 before being abandoned in 1928. It was gradually restored from the late 1970s. Today an active canal society operates two trip boats from here. Their larger boat, Richmond, named after the canal patron the Duke of Richmond, is seen waiting for a charter trip.
