In the early 1800s the population of Bognor Regis and the surrounding villages had to rely upon local wells for their water supply.
It was not until 1874 that, to improve matters, the Bognor Water Company was established by a group of local businessmen.
The Company's first source was a well and borehole situated in London Road, and a water tower constructed alongside, finally completed 1879.
However, it was not long before residents began to complain of a salty taste to the water and intrusion from sea water was confirmed by samples taken in 1881.

The Bognor Water Company sinking a well and borehole at Fontwell, Eastergate, Sussex, 1893, Ref- 257
Following unsuccessful attempts to find a new source at South Bersted, Merston, Mundham and Drayton,
the Company was finally successful at a site at Fontwell, although not without initial problems.
The first well and borehole was sunk in 1893 and produced a very limited amount of water
but, in a well only 19 feet away they found a copious supply, still in use today. - click image to return
